“Delicious, innovative food served in an intimate setting” has been the draw at chef Gus Ashenford and his wife Kate’s former Cotswold village tearoom for 22 years. The cooking is rooted in the classical French cuisine of Gus’s mentor, the late Michel Roux senior, but the ratings were dragged down this year by a reporter who felt “the food is interesting and individual, but not as exceptional as my last visit some years ago”.

“Constant high quality both in taste and inventiveness” has been a hallmark of chef-patron Gus Ashenford’s cooking at the “always delightful” small restaurant, a converted Cotswold tea room, he has run with his wife Kate for two decades. His modern British dishes, underpinned by the French classical techniques he learned under his mentor, the late Michel Roux Senior, invariably “look beautiful on the plate”.

Chef-patron Gus Ashenford and his wife Kate this year celebrate the 20th anniversary of their “small restaurant – a bow-windowed former tea room – in a pretty little Cotswolds town”, where they treat guests to consistently “amazing food”, “full of flavour and providing excellent value”. Gus trained under the late Michel Roux at the Waterside Inn, and his cuisine is underpinned by classical French techniques.

“A small restaurant that punches well above its weight” – Gus & Kate Ashenford’s former Cotswolds tea room has long delivered “a totally outstanding culinary experience”. “The chef-proprietor is highly talented, serving seasonal food with a perfect balance of flavours, exciting combinations and beautiful presentation. It’s French cuisine brought up to date.”

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
