1. Royale at East London Liquor Company French restaurant in Bethnal Green Bow Wharf, 221 Grove Road - E3
Born of necessity but now here to stay – this pandemic pop-up from the team behind Leroy turned permanent in June 2021. Within Bow Wharf’s East London Liquor Co – and with a large outside terrace – it aims to bring some easygoing Provençal good times to E3, in the form of rotisserie chicken and other ‘comforting’ dishes, plus gluggable wines.
2. E Pellicci Italian restaurant in Bethnal Green 332 Bethnal Green Rd - E2
“You don’t come here for the food: the welcome and the banter are the main attraction!”, say fans of the Nevio family’s “buzzy” (but hipster-free) Bethnal Green greasy spoon, which is a top choice for a “simple breakfast”. Architecture anoraks will also want to examine its (listed) Art Deco interior (often used as a location for TV).
3. Campania & Jones Italian restaurant in Bethnal Green 23 Ezra St - E2
Rustic former cowshed that’s one of the quainter diversions when visiting Columbia Road Flower Market. On limited feedback, we received nothing but good ratings this year for its Italian cooking, but the weight of custom at busy times means service can suffer.
4. Bistrotheque British, Modern restaurant in Bethnal Green 23-27 Wadeson St - E2
“This crisp, clean, chic warehouse” with “big industrial windows” in Cambridge Heath is, say fans, the “perfect, perfect, perfect spot for a lovely weekend brunch” or a “lush lunch with oysters and Champagne”. A hipster haven for 15 years, it still rates well for its “delicious food” and an atmosphere boosted by live music.
5. Corner Room British, Modern restaurant in Bethnal Green Patriot Sq - E2
Bethnal Green’s old town hall – nowadays a boutique hotel – houses this 30-seater overseen by chef, Simon Shand. Although it lacks the profile it once did, the limited feedback we received this year was all positive: in particular “the fixed price, five-course menu is excellent value for good, modern British cuisine”.
7. Sager + Wilde Restaurant International restaurant in Bethnal Green 250 Paradise Row - E2
2019 Review: Hackney oenophiles make a beeline for these this ambitious pair – “I love the wine list!”. The Paradise Row venue, in a railway arch with a large terrace, features an Italian menu, while the Hackney Road wine bar serves snacks and charcuterie. In either case the food avoids criticism, but the liquid refreshment is the main event.
9. Coupette French restaurant in Bethnal Green 423 Bethnal Green Rd - E2
Chris Moore, former head bartender at the Savoy's Beaufort Bar, has taken over the Albion pub on Bethnal Green Road, and has brought together a team of bartenders and chefs to create Coupette, which will focus on regional French drinks and cocktails; food will probably not be the main attraction, but will also be Gallic in nature, with weekend brunch in the pipeline.
