This “fabulously located” Italian on the Hackney stretch of Regent’s Canal has shades (‘ombra’ in Italian) of Venice, although head chef Mitshel Ibrahim hails from Milan, where his parents had an Ethiopian restaurant. “Terrific tastes are delivered by an obviously enthusiastic kitchen and serving team” – “if we didn’t live 200 miles away this would be a regular haunt”. Its lockdown project has turned into a permanent pasta factory next door.

"ombra was fabulous. a wild mushroom squid and lardo dish was sweet, mushrooms intense with the seafood playing it's part. tried on a whim, but very much enjoyed. then a sardine pasta / pheasant. both excellent. well cooked. well balanced, seasoned and with great little touches. delicious. the only mis firing note was the tiramisu - enjoyable but I prefer a bit more punch. friendly staff, clearly wanting to be at work to have a good time and ensure we did. busy with music, other customers and staff making the places atmosphere. because as it stands it's basic in decor and conception. given the delicious food and solid buzz, who cares? "
