Harden's says

Italian restaurant "with its heart in Venice", appropriately for a canalside spot.

“Basic in decor and set-up, but given the delicious food and solid buzz, who cares?” – this “busy” Hackney Italian gets its swing from “staff who clearly want to be at work and have a good time”; not to mention, in summer, its superb location on Regent’s Canal complete with heated terrace. The Italian food is also far from an afterthought and can be “fabulous” (“a wild mushroom squid and lardo dish was sweet, mushrooms intense with the seafood playing its part; sardine pasta and pheasant were both excellent – well-cooked, well-balanced, well-seasoned and with great little touches”).

A superb location – on the Regent’s Canal and complete with heated terrace – helps justify the continued inclusion of this Hackney Italian. Feedback is too thin and nuanced for a full rating this year – according to one fan it’s “still good all round, but the ratio of hype to expectations is high”.

This “fabulously located” Italian on the Hackney stretch of Regent’s Canal has shades (‘ombra’ in Italian) of Venice, although head chef Mitshel Ibrahim hails from Milan, where his parents had an Ethiopian restaurant. “Terrific tastes are delivered by an obviously enthusiastic kitchen and serving team”“if we didn’t live 200 miles away this would be a regular haunt”. Its lockdown project has turned into a permanent pasta factory next door.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
