Fish & Seafood Restaurants in Bankside
1. Seabird at The Hoxton, Southwark
Fish & seafood restaurant in Southwark
The Hoxton, 40 Blackfriars Road - SE1
“You feel like you are on holiday” at this ‘it-could-be-Manhattan’ rooftop location – a “gorgeous” 14th-floor perch which, despite the name of the hotel, is located in Southwark. Order some “really mouthwatering” seafood from the raw bar (including a wide range of oysters), sip a sundowner, and catch a few rays. There’s a lovely high-ceilinged interior for inclement weather. “Some diners are more interested in looking good for Insta than eating, but that’s all part of the entertainment!”
2. Sea Containers, Mondrian London
British, Modern restaurant in Bankside
20 Upper Ground - SE1
“It’s such a treat to sit next to the Thames, with a great view” at this “sleek” hotel dining room near Blackfriars Bridge, designed by Tom Dixon. Its range of eating possibilities – bottomless Bloody Mary or Prosecco brunch, especially – were rated well this year. Even fans, though, say “it is pricey – so come prepared to spend!”
3. Burger & Lobster
Burgers, etc restaurant in City
Bow Bells Hs, 1 Bread St - EC4
“Both the burgers and the lobster rolls attract long queues for a reason – they are very good”, agree fans of this 10-year-old surf ’n’ turf chain that has expanded to nine branches across the capital and a growing list around the world. “Prices are up sharply since launch though, so they’re not quite the value they once were” – nor are they as straightforward, with the initial flat price of £20 morphing into a more conventional menu of burgers and assorted seafood. The value offer now is in the “stunning lobster rolls, which have redefined for me and others how lobster should best be served” – so “stick to the lobster for good quality at a reasonable price”. The chain and its equally American-style stablemate Goodman steakhouses were founded and are still owned by Moscow-based Misha Zelman.
4. Wright Brothers
Fish & seafood restaurant in Southwark
11 Stoney St - SE1
“Amazing seafood” – “really fresh and full of taste” – is the headliner at this oyster supplier turned producer turned “bustling” seafood bar at Borough Market, from brothers-in-law Ben Wright and Robin Hancock (now also with offshoots at Battersea Power Station and South Ken). In March 2021, acclaimed chef Henry Harris joined as group chef, adding his knowledge of classic meat dishes and fine wines to the Wright Bros’ traditional oysters, crustaceans and seafood platters. Top Tip: “curried oysters sounds awful and sacrilegious but is stunning – a real tasting experience”.
5. Sweetings
Fish & seafood restaurant in City
39 Queen Victoria St - EC4
“A unique institution for fish, not to be missed” – this timewarped Victorian curio has been part of life in the Square Mile for as long as anyone can remember (it was founded on a different site in the 1830s and has been here since the 1920s). Seating is fairly crammed and higgledy-piggledy – be it at the counter or in the rear dining room – but that’s all part of its appeal for a besuited clientele who don’t begrudge the daunting prices for simple seafood dishes and proper puds, washed down by the most ardent traditionalists with Black Velvet in pewter tankards.
6. fish!
Fish & seafood restaurant in Southwark
Cathedral St - SE1
“The fish and shellfish is so fresh and perfectly cooked” at this glass-and-steel venue “in the buzzing environment of Borough Market”. Founded in 1999, it has continued to prosper with the expansion of the foodie market.
7. Applebee’s Fish
Fish & seafood restaurant in Southwark
5 Stoney St - SE1
“Once an old-fashioned chippy, it has upped its game effectively now that Borough Market has become fashionable” and nowadays is a more stylish café in this foodie enclave, where a plate of simply prepared fish or seafood makes for the perfect al fresco lunch. Top Tip: “the Applebee’s prawn and fish wrap is one of the best things to eat in London”.
