Nieves Barragán brings her magic to Shoreditch

Leading Spanish chef Nieves Barragán this week opened Legado in Shoreditch – her highly anticipated follow-up to Sabor in Mayfair.

Expectations are high for the new venture: Sabor, which opened in 2018, has registered extraordinary scores of 5-5-5 in the annual Harden’s guide – the highest possible ratings for food, service and ambience – for three consecutive years.

Nieves grew up close to Bilbao in the Basque Country, but at Legado – Spanish for legacy – she takes inspiration from throughout Spain, with a wide-ranging menu that has a special focus on lamb and Iberico pork.

The venue, in the new Montacute Yards development off Shoreditch High Street, is divided between a ‘taberna’ serving tapas-style small plates and the restaurant proper, where you can eat at tables or at a counter overlooking the kitchen. The taberna and counter operate on a walk-in basis, so it should be possible to dine without booking unless you are in a larger party.

Meanwhile, another Hispanic restaurant – Camino – has this week opened a new Basque-style pintxos bar called Pintxito in the piazza at Covent Garden.
