Steve Drake passes the baton at Sorrel

Steve Drake has stepped back from the kitchen at his highly regarded Surrey restaurant Sorrel, with Alex Payne taking over as chef-patron this week.

Sorrell has been a regular top-20 presence on the Harden’s 100 list of the UK’s best restaurants in recent years, while Alex came to prominence running The Tudor Pass restaurant at Great Fosters hotel near Windsor.

Steve remains owner of Sorrel and will now focus on other projects, including his consultancy Steve Drake Food.

He said: “I’m thrilled to welcome Alex to Sorrel. He’s a chef of exceptional skill and vision, and I’m confident he’ll help shape the restaurant’s next chapter with his unique perspective and culinary creativity. I’ll remain closely involved behind the scenes, supporting the team and helping guide Sorrel’s future.”

Alex said: “It’s a privilege to carry forward the legacy that Steve has so brilliantly built at Sorrel and I’m committed to continuing that journey while bringing my own energy, direction and vision to the table. I can’t wait to finally get started and welcome you all.”
