UnknownThis year, Fitzrovia’s “quality” but decidedly “old-fashioned” Indian restaurant Gaylord celebrates its 50th anniversary. This enduring venue was first opened in 1966 by then owner P.L. Lamba (who himself has just celebrated his 97th birthday).

In recognition of Gaylord introducing its signature Chicken Tikka Masala all those years ago, they will be offering a special 1966 menu all day on Monday 4 and Tuesday 5 July (lunch only). It features several dishes at 1966 prices, including Chicken Tikka Masala which will cost 6 shillings – or just 30p. Guests can also grab an onion bhaji or tarka daal for 15p!

Bookings are available for up to four people for lunch or dinner on Monday 4 July and lunch only on Tuesday 5 July. Even with a cover charge of £2 per person this is set to be a serious bargain.

Gaylord are also delighted to announce the launch of their own special 50th Anniversary branded label on Fratelli Wines; Gran Cuvée Brut, Sangiovese Bianco, Sangiovese.  As part of the celebrations, customers are able to buy two bottles and get the third one free… great for a group booking! This offer is available by the glass too. So if you are in the mood for bubbles, or fancy something red to complement your curry, Gaylord have your wine supply covered! An anniversary isn’t the same without a party, which is why Gaylord is hosting an exclusive party this weekend to mark the 50th Anniversary which is set to be a true Indian extravaganza, with street food, vibrant cocktails and exciting entertainment.

Gaylord is one of the oldest Indian restaurants in London, and over the years has been a destination for celebs like George Harrison & Ringo Starr, Peter Sellers, Rex Harrison, Faye Dunaway and Ben Elton. And sports stars such as Ian Botham, Clive Lloyd, Sunil Gavaskar and Alvin Kallicharran have long been regulars.

The restaurant’s Tandoor charcoal clay oven was flown over from India 50 years ago. So precious was this commodity that it was given its own seat on the aircraft!  The same oven is still used today, 50 years on, as Gaylord stays true to their philosophy that ‘tradition is always in’.

Gaylord is now part of Kwality Group, co-founded by P.L. Lamba, and is now headed up by Sunil and Dhruv Lamba. Its sister restaurant in Mumbai is celebrating 60 years this year.

As part of the celebrations, Gaylord have partnered with Indian winemaker Fratelli to create a special Gaylord 50th anniversary wine label: Gran Cuvée Brut, Sangiovese Bianco, Sangiovese.
