Idyllic Cotswolds pub back in business

The Cotswolds set (and visitors in search of the idyll) have another lovingly restored old pub to choose from with the reopening of the Wild Duck at Ewen, near Cirencester in Gloucestershire, after a seven-year closure.

The 16th-century Grade II listed inn has been glossily refurbed by Sam and Georgie Pearman, the couple behind the Double Red Duke and Masons Arms in Clanfield, to display its exposed stone walls, old beams, original fireplaces and mullioned windows to best advantage.

There is a bar with revived Double Diamond on tap, while meals are served in a series of low-ceilinged, low-lit snugs and alcoves, with a bistro-style conservatory for larger groups. A smart but hearty menu featuring a wild-boar pie has been created by group executive chef James Adams, previously of the River Café, and head chef Richard Sandiford, ex-Hawksmoor.

The pub’s original five guest rooms have been supplemented by 14 bedrooms in a new extension, targeting tourists, weekenders and midweek metropolitan escapees.
