Featured Padstow Restaurants
1. Appletons at the Vineyard
Italian restaurant in Padstow
Dark Lane - PL27
“Windows overlooking the vineyard” afford views onto this peacefully located spot – run by Andy Appleton (a graduate of Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen Cornwall) although the “huge barn” it occupies can feel a tad “quiet” at less busy times. Numerous “excellent” meals are reported last year from its Med-slanted modern British menu.
2. Paul Ainsworth at No. 6
British, Modern restaurant in Padstow
6 Middle St - PL28
“Outstanding… that is all!”. Paul Ainsworth’s intimate and illustrious eleven-year-old is nowadays the most-mentioned operation in town, far eclipsing Rick Stein’s nearby Seafood Restaurant in terms of the excitement it generates. “The kitchen can be seen from the tables, and is a dream to watch”, with “Paul himself almost invariably present”. The cuisine is as you might hope for – “technically accomplished, with quality materials, some inventiveness, and carefully prepared to preserve flavours”. “However, it’s the attention to detail, and the overwhelming passion for the place from its staff” that seals the experience for some diners: “nothing was too much trouble”.
3. Prawn on the Lawn
Fish & seafood restaurant in Padstow
11 Duke Street - PL28
“Just brilliant, incredibly fresh seafood” is the payoff for a visit to Rick & Katie Toogood’s “very small” and “cramped” venture (24 covers), which – since they made the move from Islington in 2015 – has shown it can compete with the best of the best in this foodie enclave. (They still also own the restaurant of the same name in N1).
4. Seafood Restaurant
Fish & seafood restaurant in Padstow
Riverside - PL28
Harsher reports say the Stein family’s “large and buzzing” HQ near the harbour wall (but without any views) is “overpriced and you’re paying for the name”. But, a more representative view on the cradle of Rick Stein’s TV celebrity is that “despite the close proximity of the tables in the dining room, it’s still worth a visit”. Yes, probably there are restaurants “just as good but cheaper elsewhere in Cornwall” (and it’s not in the same league as Nathan Outlaw’s restaurants down the coast), but most reports still acclaim its “good choice” of “fantastic and well-prepared fish”, agreeable atmosphere and “friendly, knowledgeable staff”.
5. Rick Stein’s Café
Fish & chips restaurant in Padstow
10 Middle Street - PL28
One of six Stein venues in the Cornish capital of his empire, this casual outfit is notable for its “very good value”, and wins solid ratings for a “limited menu of well-cooked” fish and seafood.
6. Stein’s Fish & Chips
Fish & chips restaurant in Padstow
South Quay - PL28
2018 Review: Very high marks for the Stein empire’s chippie in its home town. For the best experience though “you need to visit out of season”.
7. St Petroc’s Hotel & Bistro
Mediterranean restaurant in Padstow
4 New Street - PL28
2018 Review: Mixed feedback this year on the Stein empire’s informal hotel-restaurant; fans find the “food can be very good” and a “hidden garden” adds to its charms, but the “poor table layout” continues to irk and “service could improve” – “come on Rick you could do better”!
8. Mahé
Fish & seafood restaurant in Padstow
Middle Street - PL28
From Paul and Emma Ainsworth and John Lambert, a cookery school (by day) and chef's table (by night), right next door to Paul Ainsworth at No. 6; it's named after the island in the Indian Ocean where Paul's parents met. This is the Ainsworth's fourth Padstow venture.
9. Nudi
Fish & seafood restaurant in Padstow
1a The Strand - PL28
After a successful pop-up on Broad Street, Nudi has moved into a permanent Padstow restaurant.
10. Caffè Rojano
Italian restaurant in Padstow
9 Mill Square - PL28
Still owned by the Ainsworths, the former Rojano's in the Square site has been relaunched as an NYC-style Italian cafe.
