Featured Kentish Town Restaurants
1. Anima e Cuore Italian restaurant in LONDON 129 Kentish Town Rd - NW1
“Fab creative Italian food” – “an ever-changing menu with great homemade pasta” – is “served with charm in the most unpretentious environment”, at this “tiny BYO café” in Kentish Town. With ratings improving every year, locals are smitten by this “lovely hidden gem”, so the only problem is the increasing difficulty of grabbing a seat – but then again “they’re expanding, so perhaps it’ll become a little easier to get a table”.
2. Bull & Last International restaurant in Kentish Town 168 Highgate Rd - NW5
“Cannot wait for this gem of a place to reopen!” – Kentish Town’s brilliant Heath-side destination has been closed for most of the last year, as it turns itself into a six-bedroom pub-with-rooms. Set to re-open in late-2019, here’s hoping they haven’t mucked up what’s ranked as north London’s top gastropub in recent years.
3. Pizza East Pizza restaurant in Kentish Town 79 Highgate Rd - NW5
“Big and still with a great buzz” – these “vibey”, industrial-style haunts, owned by the Soho House group, have won an impressive following with their “inventive pizzas” (lots of them meaty), grungy-cool styling and staff who – despite a fair dose of hipster cred – maintain a welcoming attitude. Its ratings came off the boil a little this year, though, and the odd reporter feels their performance is seeming more “tired”.
4. The Junction Tavern British, Modern restaurant in Kentish Town 101 Fortess Rd - NW5
2018 Review: Limited but all-round upbeat feedback on this popular gastropub on the Tufnell Park/Kentish Town borders, complete with conservatory and small garden.
5. Carob Tree Greek restaurant in Kentish Town 15 Highgate Rd - NW5
2019 Review: “They won’t let anyone go hungry!”, say fans of this “always crowded” Greek local in Dartmouth Park, where “you’re treated as a long lost friend”, and which is praised for its “excellent fish and mezze”. (One terrible meal was reported here this year – so far it seems like just a blip.)
6. Chicken Shop Chicken restaurant in Kentish Town 79 Highgate Rd - NW5
2018 Review: Arguably they’re just “a fancy version of Nandos”, but Soho House’s “deliciously moreish and quite addictive” pit stops “do one thing, and do it well”: “succulent moist chicken, piping hot salty chips, melt in your mouth corn on the cob and the grand finale, the spongy light apple pie”.
7. Doppio Sandwiches, cakes, etc restaurant in Kentish Town 177 Kentish Town Rd - NW1
2018 Review: “Exceptional coffee from experts” who “take real pride in making an outstanding brew” can be sampled at these on-trend espresso bars, operated by a coffee wholesaler in Camden Town, Shoreditch and Battersea. NB they “sell and service coffee machines”, but “they don’t serve food”!
8. The Bull & Gate International restaurant in Kentish Town 389 Kentish Town Rd - NW5
2016 Review: It took Young’s two years to restore this old Kentish Town boozer, but by all accounts its a huge improvement – “great food, so different from how it was”.
9. Fields Beneath Vegan restaurant in Kentish Town 52a Prince of Wales Road - NW5
2019 Review: Beneath Kentish Town station, this well-established and cosy neighbourhood café “recently went all-vegan” and the change has been a hit – “it still produces great coffee” and light dishes that are “always delicious”. “It just needs more space!”
10. E Mono Turkish restaurant in Kentish Town 285-287 Kentish Town Road - NW5
“Succulent-tasting kebabs” at this “great value”, family-run Turkish joint (which adopted its name from the original Victorian signage) were “recommended by Giles Coren” some years ago – and our reporters have consistently backed his judgement: “their success is deserved”.
