Fish & Seafood Restaurants in Essex
1. West Mersea Oyster Bar Fish & seafood restaurant in West Mersea Coast Rd - CO5
Arguably “a more rounded experience than The Company Shed down the road” – this stripped-back seafront diner is “friendly, good value and busy”; and offers a “great variety of hot and cold fish dishes” (not least superlative oysters, their beds in sight).
2. The Company Shed Fish & seafood restaurant in West Mersea 129 Coast Rd - CO5
“The queuing and lack of finesse in customer care (plus the uncomfortable shed setting) are all part of the joy” at this rough-and-ready veteran spot, turning out “amazing fresh fish”… er, and that’s about it, so you may want to take advantage of the BYO bread and bottle policy (though they do now have a licence too).
3. Alec's British, Modern restaurant in Brentwood Navestock Side - CM14
This “glitzy and glamorous” smartened-up pub is perhaps a little TOWIE and inspires the odd complaint about its prices, but, nevertheless, it’s fish and seafood cuisine won consistently decent ratings last year, and fans say the place is “excellent for a special occasion”.
5. Native Fish & seafood restaurant in Osea Island
Native is on the move again: from autumn 2020 it is operating from Osea Island on the Essex Coast in a former WW1 torpedo store with 30 covers. Dining times will be dictated by the tide, with access via car over the Roman causeway or boat. Start with a campfire and snacks on the beach, before a tasting menu priced at £75 per person (with £55 per person for the wine pairing). There will also be a seafood shack, specialising in Blackwater and West Mersea oysters.
