Pomus spreads its roots along Kent coast

Ryan Jacovides is expanding his Pomus group in Kent with the launch of a new restaurant in Folkestone next month, just weeks after opening a mini-spinoff kiosk called Pom on Margate Harbour Arm. He opened the original Pomus in Margate a year ago.

The new restaurant, wine bar and bottle shop has taken over the old Brewery Tap in Folkestone’s Creative Quarter, which closed down as a pub in 2004 and has been used as an art gallery since then. The original signage and facade have been retained.

Ryan, a former managing director of the Jamie Oliver Group, says he has no plans to turn Pomus into a national brand, and that the new branch within Kent was the result of an invitation from Folkestone’s Creative Quarter.

“It’s come early for us to expand following our Pomus Margate launch last summer, but taking on the iconic old Brewery Tap building was too good to pass up, and so I immediately said yes when I was approached about the site.

“Even though it’s going to have the same name, there’s going to be a lot of local nuances with the supply chain, with the menu, and with the design as well. The quality is going to be the same, but it’s going to feel very different.”

Local chef Kieran Golding, who has worked for Gordon Ramsay in London, will be head chef at Pomus Folkestone, offering dishes such as: Megrim sole with sea herbs, tomato and smoked butter; Aged beef tartare with cured egg, mustard and lovage; Beetroot tarte tatin with blue cheese; and Rhubarb tart with tonka bean and creme fraiche.

Bookings have opened from Wednesday 9 July, but the venue may well be open to walk-ins from next week.
