River Cottage Canteen to open in Winchester

A new River Cottage Canteen will open, in Winchester city centre, on 24 September. The restaurant, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s fourth outpost, will occupy a Grade II listed building, Abbey Mill, just off the Broadway.

In addition to the dining room, the site will also have a separate bar area offering a selection of local cider, beer, cocktails, coffees, cakes and snacks. The Canteen will host regular events like cocktail clubs, live music nights, cookery demos and Christmas parties.

As always the regularly changing menu will be all about seasonal, local, organic and wild food.

The first River Cottage Canteen was set up in Axminster by Hugh in 2008, since then River Cottage has gone on to open Canteens in Plymouth (2011) and Bristol (2013).

The opening tends to confirm our impression that once-sleepy Winchester is beginning to emerge as something of a force in the restaurant world.
