Former Heston Blumenthal protégé Christopher White has left the Fat Duck to open his first solo venture The White Spoon in Cheltenham on 18 September. His new restaurant will be inspired by his time with the Merlin of molecular gastronomy but offers a more ‘approachable and laid-back’ (and considerably cheaper) menu.
Having worked at both the Fat Duck and the Hind’s Head in Bray, White is going it alone with this modern British brasserie in Cheltenham’s Well Walk. In stark comparison to his fine dining roots The White Sppon will offer a three course menu for just £17 pp, and two courses for £12 pp. (Heston’s relaunched Fat Duck menu is £255 pp sans drinks and service – just to put that in perspective!)
White will run the restaurant with his partner Purdey Spooner. On the menu: Goats’ milk custard and goat curd served with beets, scorched carrot and cobnuts; blackened sirloin of beef, potato terrine with pan roasted carrot, king oyster mushroom and onion flavours; and dark chocolate and Cointreau sponge, with white chocolate and honeycomb, served with a burnt orange sorbet and coconut parfait.
