Wine bar as filial tribute

Michael Sager of Hackney wine bar Sager + Wilde is opening a new venue near Victoria Park this month. Bar Bruno is set in a cute Victorian stable, and will serve natural wines alongside small plates with a focus on Swiss-style filled pretzels.

The venture will operate as a shop by day, with everything on the shelves available to drink in with a £15 mark up, including bottles from Michael’s own cellar. “It’s natural wine, done well – a very personal selection,” he says.

The bar is named after Swiss-born Michael’s father, Bruno, who helped him get started in the business. “Now it’s time to express my gratitude to him,” Michael says.

I really want to surprise him with it. He loves London, and the interior feel to Bar Bruno is going to reflect his new hobby of restoring antiques.” The central feature of the bar is a counter made from repurposed teak worktops salvaged from Nottingham University.

For le patron, the new bar is not just personal, it’s also local: “I’ve lived just down the road for seven years now and I’m really excited about it,” he says.
