Featured Wetherby Restaurants
2. The Tannin Level
British, Traditional restaurant in Harrogate
5 Raglan St - HG1
“Very enjoyable tasty food and friendly service” underpin a formula that’s won enduring success for this stalwart cellar in the lower ground floor of a solid Victorian mansion which celebrates its 40th year in 2025. The traditional-ish cuisine aims for ‘Yorkshire on a plate’ and the sensibly priced and focused menu covers all bases, including a selection of steaks.
3. Tattu
Chinese restaurant in Leeds
29 East Parade, Minerva House - LS1
With its dramatic, Insta-friendly looks, it would be easy to dismiss this supremely glossy venue – part of a group originating in Manchester – as ‘just another pretty face’. Its mashup of Chinese and Japanese cuisine is respectably rated, however, and it’s also highlighted as “a great place for brunch”.
4. General Tarleton
British, Modern restaurant in Ferrensby
Boroughbridge Rd - HG5
This comfortable gastropub with rooms is well-known to some who travel the northerly reaches of the A1 (off which it is to be found) and was in days long gone by a sibling to the Angel at Hetton. After an up-and-down performance in recent years, it’s now been relaunched since August 2025 as part of Tommy Banks’s expanding northern empire and provides superior pub classics and more ambitious fare at restaurant-level prices. Reports please!
5. Aagrah
Indian restaurant in Leeds
St Peter’s Sq - LS9
2024 Review: “They always go the extra mile” according to fans of this city-centre outpost of Yorkshire’s nine-strong chain of well-regarded curry houses – a family-run business established in 1977.
6. Sukhothai
Thai restaurant in Leeds
15 South Parade - LS1
“For a consistently great night out” fans still tip the flagship city-centre branch of Ban Kaewkraikhot’s local Thai group, which started in Chapel Allerton and which also has a branch in Harrogate. It’s a lavishly furnished two-floor venue with a huge, 200+ item menu.
7. Skosh
Pan-Asian restaurant in York
98 Micklegate - YO1
“Love Skosh!” – “Sceptics of fusion food need have no fear of pretentious, jarring combinations” at Neil Bentinck’s “always busy” open-kitchen hotspot: yet again the most commented-on destination in town in our annual diners’ poll. Few restaurants nationally attract reports that are so overflowing with praise and enthusiasm, making this “a must-visit when in York” for “a memorable meal” and allowing him to expand in 2024 into the adjoining property (and it’s “still full, even with the addition of the new bar and walk-in seats”). “The range of tasty small plates keeps you coming back” – the selection is eclectic and “often internationally inspired” served “in a stylish yet relaxed setting”. Plus “it’s rare to go somewhere that treats its staff so well that you see the same faces every time you visit”. Top Menu Tip – “Hen’s egg, katsu mussels, beef dumpling, Whitby crab tostados, hogget sausage miso onions, spiced cod and hogget shawarma – all perfectly cooked and top value – this place deserves a Michelin star!”.
8. Legacy
restaurant in York
The Grand York, Station Rise - YO1
“What a surprise! Not normally a hotel restaurant fan but this broke the mold” – so says one Surrey-based fan of this appropriately, er, grand dining room: the culinary centre-piece of the city’s only five-star hotel (complete with 207 rooms and spa), whose building was constructed in 1906 as the HQ for the North Eastern Railway. Fans applaud the “warm service and beautifully prepared food from three tasting menus for £100, £115 and £130 per person with optional wine flights” (dubbed ‘Stone’, ‘Water’ and ‘Steel’) – more reports please!
9. The Alice Hawthorn
British, Modern restaurant in Nun Monkton
The Green - YO26
“A great pub with rooms in a lovely village just outside York” which makes “a good meeting place in a village just off the A1” and whose contemporary style is very pleasing and slick (“dare one say it, very unlike the North of England....” says a Bradford-based diner). Service is “professional yet friendly” and “the varied menu remains consistent making it always a pleasure to go there”.
10. Fleur Restaurant and bar
restaurant in Leeds city centre
Inside the lights - LS1

11. Tharavadu
Indian restaurant in Leeds
7- 8 Mill Hill - LS1
“You are transported straight to Kerala with the depth of flavors, impeccable service, and warm, welcoming atmosphere” at this eleven-year-old Leeds favourite, which is in the top-20 most commented on destinations in our annual diners’ poll outside London (although “as your last edition said, you’d walk past it if you did not know about it”). “With South Indian cuisine still under-represented in many UK cities, Tharavadu not only fills this gap but sets a gold standard for authenticity and execution, so it’s no surprise that it’s frequently hailed as one of the best Indian restaurants in the North”. “Service is polished yet personal” and “the team seem to take genuine pride in explaining the dishes, and recommending pairings”. It’s a “comfortable” place too with a “great atmosphere, as it’s packed out”. This year, they opened a sibling called Uyare – see also. Top Menu Tip – “The dosas are among the best you’ll find outside of India – crispy, golden, and generously filled, whether you opt for the classic Masala Dosa or the indulgent Cheese & Chilli Uthappam. The Meen Pollichathu, a Kerala-style fish dish wrapped in banana leaves, is an absolute must-try, showcasing the kitchen’s ability to balance bold spices with subtle, aromatic undertones. Vegetarians are spoilt for choice too, with standout dishes like the Kadala Curry (black chickpea in a rich, coconutty sauce) and the Avial, a delicately spiced mixed-vegetable curry that feels both wholesome and indulgent”.
13. The Bow Room Restaurant
British, Modern restaurant in York
Grays Court Hotel, Chapter House Street - YO1
“Take a pre-dinner drink in the amazing garden to enjoy the full experience” if you visit this grand five-star hotel, which has a “superb location” in one of the city’s oldest and finest houses, near the minster. It also wins praise for its “very friendly” staff, and high ratings for chef Ian Doyle’s accomplished cuisine. There is a relatively affordable à la carte option, with main dishes such as saddle of lamb or pan-roasted fish for £30-£40; or a more ambitious eight-course tasting menu for £130 per person.
14. Sukhothai
Thai restaurant in Leeds
8 Regent St - LS7
2022 Review: Feedback remains limited but remains very positive for this Chapel Allerton Thai (part of a local group), which hits twenty years old in 2022.
15. Sukhothai
Thai restaurant in Harrogate
17-19 Cheltenham Pde - HG1
“Thai cooking of the same standard as the country’s best”, all served in a “busy and friendly” environment wins consistently all-round praise for this popular outpost of Ben Kaewkraikhot’s small Yorkshire group (which started in Chapel Allerton in 2002).

17. Fish and Forest
Fish & seafood restaurant in York
13 Grape Lane - YO1
“Glad to see Fish and Forest settled into its new, larger home in a more central York location” – Steven Andrews’s descriptively-named bistro shifted to this “new Grape Lane location” in August 2024 (a site previously owned by his parents and run as the 1331 Bar & Grill). He serves an “excellent, inventive and short menu” (four starters, four mains, two puds) which changes frequently based on the availability of produce. One reporter complained that there was “not enough of the forest on the menu”, but there is mostly all-round praise in feedback for the “comfortable environment, knowledgeable staff” and “some outstanding flavours coupled to impeccable ingredients that make for a lovely experience”.
18. Piccolino
Italian restaurant in Wetherby
Wetherby Rd - LS22
In a picturesque village near Wetherby in Yorkshire, this branch of a glitzy Cheshire-based Italian operation is strongly rated across the board – owned since 2020 by Sir Malcom Walker of Iceland, the group recently celebrated its 25th anniversary with a special menu of dishes such as Wagyu beef and truffle lasagna.
19. Clocktower Restaurant, Rudding Park Hotel
British, Modern restaurant in Harrogate
Rudding Pk, Follifoot - HG3
2024 Review: Attached to a luxurious spa hotel, this modern brasserie is open all day (with other options in the hotel being the more ambitious Horto, or afternoon tea in the Conservatory). One fan notes it as a good place for a relaxed business meal, but there is also the odd concern that its “good ambience can be let down by average results at excessive prices”.
20. Horto Restaurant at Rudding Park
British, Modern restaurant in Follifoot
2022 Review: This “lovely hotel” is so proud of its own produce that it named its main restaurant Horto, Latin for kitchen garden, and charged young head chef Callum Bowmer (who arrived for two weeks’ work experience in 2010 and never left) with the task of creating showcase menus from it. The resulting meals are “really enjoyable”.
