Indian Restaurants in Caterham
1. Indian Essence
Indian restaurant in Petts Wood
176-178 Petts Wood Rd - BR5
“Deliciously-spiced food with friendly and attentive service” inspires very high and consistent praise for Atul Kochhar’s accomplished venue, which is one of the brighter sparks in this thinly provided area of SE London’s outer ’burbs. Breaking news: according to the restaurant’s website and Insta in October 2025, an upgrade is in progress – ‘We’re thrilled to announce that Indian Essence is about to embark on a bold new chapter, transforming your dining experience. We’re blending style, comfort, and innovation to create a space as unforgettable as the food we serve, so expect a fresh look, a reimagined interior, and a few surprises on the menu’.
2. Babur
Indian restaurant in Forest Hill
119 Brockley Rise - SE23
This Honor Oak Park institution “celebrated its well-deserved 40th anniversary” over the last year and “continues to provide some of the best Indian cooking in London” – it “looks and to an extent feels like a neighbourhood curry house, but the food is in another league”, with diners travelling from beyond southeast London to sample chef Jiwan Lal’s cuisine. They get a warm welcome, too (“I’ve been a regular customer for over 25 years and am greeted like an old friend”). Top Tips – “the good-value Sunday lunch buffet is well worth a trek”; “Swordfish tikka with a well-balanced radish pickle; Champaran mutton curry with excellent quality meat; Mango creme brulee with a very delicate crust”.
3. Pure Indian Cooking
Indian restaurant in Fulham
67 Fulham High Street - SW6
Ignore the “average curry house” looks: this place “turns out adventurous and seductive dishes as good as many of the Michelin-starred Indians”, offering “West End flavours at suburban prices”. It’s owner-operated by “lovely people” – chef Shilpa Dandekar, who trained under both Raymond Blanc and Quilon’s Sriram Aylur, and her husband Faheem Vanoo (although “now without their own day-to-day personal attention with the opening of their new restaurant in South Kensington, Pravaas”, see also). Top Menu Tip – “the best black daal”.
4. Cinnamon Culture
Indian restaurant in Chislehurst
95-97 High Street - BR7
This modern, family-run Indian restaurant is a “very useful venue for the area”, delivering food of a “good consistent standard” from a “menu with a bit of thought behind it” – and which includes such unusual dishes as tandoori ostrich fillet and wild boar curry.
5. Chai Naasto
Indian restaurant in Beckenham
2 - 4 Fairfield Road - BR3
2024 Review: This suburban subcontinental offers an unusual take on Indian street food, having been set up by three brothers keen to pay homage to their grandmother’s cooking, inflected by her travels in Africa and Saudi Arabia; its “authentic” recipes attract nothing but positive reports.
6. Dastaan
Indian restaurant in Ewell
447 Kingston Rd - KT19
“Outrageous value” is not the only reward of a journey to the outer-limits of the metropolis and this “small”, “top-notch Indian” in a trafficky parade of shops in Ewell. You will also discover “Indian food the likes of which you have not previously experienced, full of such a variety of delicious flavours that it’s hard to limit your choices” – “rich but so tasty”. (Food commentator, Andy Hayler, who has visited every Michelin three-star on the planet, is a major fan – he’s reviewed the place 13 times!). Top Menu Tips – “best are the starters”: “super pani puri”.
7. Heritage
Indian restaurant in Dulwich
101 Rosendale Road - SE21
“Delicious fresh cooking – lamb biryani in particular is fantastic” – justifies the trip to this high-quality Indian in the boonies of West Dulwich. It’s run by Rajasthan-born chef-patron Dayashankar Sharma (who first won renown at the now-defunct Grand Trunk Road in South Woodford).
8. Lahore Karahi
Pakistani restaurant in Tooting
1 Tooting High Street, London - SW17
“Reliable curries. Quite spicy!” – This stalwart Pakistani restaurant has played a leading role in Tooting’s development as a destination for curry-lovers over the past three decades, under founder Zahid Iqbal and now his son Numan.
9. Mirch Masala
Pakistani restaurant in Tooting
213 Upper Tooting Rd - SW17
2024 Review: “Always delicious”, this well-known Pakistani canteen on Tooting’s ‘curry corridor’ offers the “same fun and good-value food as it has for years”. A favourite of local boy-made-mayor Sadiq Khan (so come on foot or by public transport), it has an offshoot in Coulsdon, on London’s southern fringe.
10. Indian Room
Indian restaurant in Balham
59 Bedford Hill - SW12
2023 Review: “Very helpful staff” add to the appeal of this Balham High Street Indian, of over 15 years’ standing. Whether it should be a perennial inclusion in TripAdvisor’s top 10 London restaurants is debatable, but the (limited) feedback we receive says it’s worth a visit.
11. Saffron Summer
Indian restaurant in Chessington
4 Ace Parade - KT9
There’s “always a cheery welcome and super-courteous service at this distinctive and cut-above restaurant” from ex-Oberoi/Cinnamon Club chef-patron Awanish Roy – the first in a now two-strong chain, with a younger spin-off in Reigate. Its “sophisticated and delicate culinary style” is “superior to any other Indian restaurants in the area”, showcased in everything from the “tiny” and “delicious” poppadoms to “tender and flavoursome” chef’s specials, which feature on a menu spanning street food, British favourites and far more exotic fare (grilled guinea fowl, say, or wild boar vindaloo).
12. Indian Ocean
Indian restaurant in Wandsworth
214 Trinity Rd - SW17
“Tasty! very tasty” – the scoff at this old-school curry house near Wandsworth Common, whose steady standards make it one of the longest-running entries in the guide.
13. Fetcham Tandoori
Indian restaurant in Fetcham
248 Cobham Road - KT22
2022 Review: In a village near Leatherhead, this well-established Indian (opened in 1983) – nowadays run by the son of the founder – is strongly applauded by its local fans.
14. Kricket
Indian restaurant in Brixton
41-43 Atlantic Road - SW9
“Interesting and unusual Indian food” – “not heavy curries at all, but a less familiar range of dishes, with very well-judged spicing and a huge range of delicate flavours” – again inspires rave reports for this superb Brit-run chain (founded by Will Bowlby & Rik Campbell), which also has a brilliant service ethos: “cheerful and obliging throughout and very prompt”. In 2025, they opened their latest 80-cover outpost in Shoreditch, which also introduced a debut breakfast menu alongside an all-day 50-cover Kafé and bar concept (serving street-food snacks). And coming soon – a launch in Covent Garden’s Neal’s Yard is planned. Top Menu Tips – “date and pistachio kuicha is particularly good; excellently light panipuri with tomato rasam”.
15. Roz ana
Indian restaurant in Kingston upon Thames
4-8 Kingston Hill - KT2
2024 Review: Set in a parade of shops, Deepinder Sondhi’s subcontinental (with smarter dining room upstairs) is a fixture in these parts for its high-quality cooking, including some more adventurous dishes (think chocolate samosas, or chicken tikka with Laphroaig masala). If you wish, you can kick things off in style in the cocktail bar.
16. Indian Moment
Indian restaurant in Battersea
44 Battersea Rise - SW11
2023 Review: This “smart, modern-style Indian” has established itself as a “really good-quality neighbourhood curry house” in its 20 years in Battersea. “Yes, it’s a little cramped and can be noisy at its busiest times, but the food is always good and the fact it’s BYOB helps keep the cost down” (£1.95 corkage fee).
17. Ganapati
Indian restaurant in Peckham
38 Holly Grove - SE15
“This old favourite” serving South Indian food “remains a pleasure” and remains a model of consistency under founder Claire Fisher, as it has been for more than 20 years. Top Menu Tips – “the homemade paratha is heaven on a plate and the spinach dal the stuff of dreams”.
18. Everest Inn
Indian restaurant in Blackheath
41 Montpelier Vale - SE3
“The food never disappoints” at this better-than-standard Nepalese and Indian specialist on the edge of Blackheath Common. Notwithstanding the choices of artworks and wall hangings, the contemporary interior avoids the classic curry house look.
19. Holy Cow
Indian restaurant in Battersea
166 Battersea Park Rd - SW11
2024 Review: “A cut above when it comes to delivered Indian food” – most reporters know this brand through its ‘at home’ business, with 15 sites delivering “a wide selection of always hot and very tasty dishes on time to your door”. They do also have two restaurants though in Putney and – since January 2023 – in Canary Wharf. The few reports we have on them say they are “a bit better than your typical curry house”.
20. Cilantro Putney
Indian restaurant in Wandsworth
244 Upper Richmond Road - SW15
For a “delicious, healthy tasting curry”, fans recommend this “solidly-good Indian” in Putney: the first UK outpost of a family-owned group, whose premises are still remembered by some as the site of Ma Goa (long RIP).
