Some say it’s “the best fish ’n’ chip shop for miles around”, some say it’s “one of the best inside the M25”. Whatever the hype, it’s generally agreed that the chippie Tony McDermott opened 35 years ago in the outskirts of Croydon serves fish of “exceptional quality, well worth going out of the way for”.

For 32 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"Once again I find myself recommending McDermotts as one of the finest fish and chip restaurants in the UK. I have had the privilege to eat in many similar restaurants across the country but I can heartily recommend McDermotts for their consistency in offering top quality fish and very reasonable prices. The service is extremely friendly and personable and I look forward to visiting them regularly for a lovely evening out- always leaving with a big smile on my face "
