“The service just gets better every year” at Tony McDermott’s “ultra-reliable fish’n’chip restaurant in an unprepossessing suburb of Croydon”, where “high-quality fish, usually cod, haddock and plaice, supplemented by scampi and chicken dishes” have been enjoyed since 1987. Its “very personable ambience” and “great value” make it a “family favourite” that is “worthy of repeated visits”.

Some say it’s “the best fish ’n’ chip shop for miles around”, some say it’s “one of the best inside the M25”. Whatever the hype, it’s generally agreed that the chippie Tony McDermott opened 35 years ago in the outskirts of Croydon serves fish of “exceptional quality, well worth going out of the way for”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"One year on and the service at McDermotts just gets better. High quality fish, usually cod, haddock and plaice, served everyday, supplemented by scampi and chicken dishes. Very personable ambience and worthy of repeated visits throughout the year. Great value for money."
