1. Artichoke French restaurant in Amersham 9 Market Sq - HP7
Perfect, perfect, perfect! Its such a surprise to find this gem nestled in Old Amersham, and Laurie Gears magnificent establishment on a picturesque Georgian street would enjoy a much higher profile if it were not bizarrely overlooked by Michelin year-on-year. Chef/Patron Laurie Gears complex cooking comes with a very deft touch: beautifully crafted, rich, with gorgeous accompanying wine, and delivered by staff who make you feel a million dollars. It is incomprehensible that it doesnt have a star in fact some say its worthy of two yet a number of fans feel that the fact that it lacks recognition almost improves it: please let them keep missing out, because it keeps the place just about affordable, and we can get a table when we want!
2. Gilbey’s British, Modern restaurant in Amersham 1 Market Sq - HP7
No complaints at all about this consistently good all-rounder, fusing a lovely interior (understated, tasteful and relaxing) and wine from the owners vineyard, with food thats always well-prepared.
3. The Grocer at 91 restaurant in Amersham 91 High Street, Amersham, Buckinghamshire, - HP7
A winning indie café, community shop, greengrocer and deli with two local branches set just a few minutes apart from one another along the High Street and a nice line in sandwiches, cakes and bacon sarnies.
4. PizzaExpress Pizza restaurant in Amersham 12 Sycamore Road - HP6
For the first 20 years of this guide, this famous pizza chain with its surprisingly distinctive branches was with tedious regularity the surveys most mentioned group: constantly re-inventing itself to remain everyones favourite standby, especially with kids in tow. Competition is sharper nowadays however, and since its ownership changed a couple of years ago (to Hony Capital) ratings and the volume of feedback have slipped well below their historical average. Yes, it is still much-mentioned, and still as reliable as ever to armies of loyal supporters, but harsher critics are stunned by the complacency and staleness of the brand: even the ubiquitous, good value voucher deals are starting to lose their shine.
5. Hawkyns British, Traditional restaurant in Amersham 16 High Street - HP7
After much fanfare its so average! This timber-framed Elizabethan coaching inn starred in Four Weddings and a Funeral, and is once again drawing attention thanks to Atul Kochhar (of Benares fame) making it the home of his latest restaurant in January 2017. But for far too many reporters, his Indian twist on British favourites is dismal, with dreary food and friendly but hopelessly amateur service.
8. The Crown Inn restaurant in Amersham 16 High St - HP7
Now trading as Hawkyns - Atul Kocchar's latest venture (named after East India Company's Sir William Hawkyns) See separate listing for "Hawkyns"
