British, Modern Restaurants in Westerham
1. The Guildford Arms
British, Modern restaurant in Greenwich
55 Guildford Grove - SE10
Ten minutes’ walk south of Greenwich BR, this Georgian corner tavern is more gastro than pub, with a stylishly updated interior and a “beautiful garden”. Much of the menu – for example, steak, fish, chicken skewers – is prepared on the robata grill, and is “a cut above your usual pub grub”.
2. The Haycutter
British, Modern restaurant in Oxted
Tanhouse Road - RH8
2023 Review: This “lovely” mid-Victorian boozer (believed to be the only ‘Haycutter’ in the country) earns solid ratings for its “good old-fashioned pub grub” and “brilliant” all-round performance. It is now part of the Brunning & Price group.
3. Kentish Hare
British, Modern restaurant in Bidborough
95 Bidborough Ridge - TN3
“Good-quality food and friendly service” at this village pub, which was rescued in a rundown state by entrepreneur Sir Keith Mills and his wife Maureen a dozen years ago, and is run by well-known chef brothers Chris & James Tanner. “It’s great for families – you can watch the chefs at work in front of you!”.
4. Bank House Wine Bar & Kitchen
British, Modern restaurant in Chislehurst
11 High Street - BR7
This smart neighbourhood restaurant and bar from Stuart Gillies, for many years Gordon Ramsay’s right-hand man, “never lets you down with quality, value or service – can’t get enough of this place”. The menu offers a mixture of classic British and modern European cuisine, with bottomless brunch on Saturdays and traditional roast on Sundays. There’s now a sibling restaurant on similar lines, Number Eight in Sevenoaks.
5. The Beacon Kitchen
British, Modern restaurant in Tunbridge Wells
Tea Garden Lane - TN3
This Arts & Crafts boutique hotel at the edge of Rusthall Common woods makes a “lovely setting” for a meal from chef Scott Goss, who trained under Gary Rhodes, served in a dining room with original stained-glass windows and wood-panelled fireplace. “Sunday lunches on the terrace are a summer treat” with “amazing views” over Happy Valley, and it’s “very popular for weddings”.
6. The Alma
British, Modern restaurant in Crystal Palace
95 Church Road - SE19
2024 Review: This “lovely food-led pub” – a carefully modernised beauty from 1854 on Crystal Palace’s thriving ‘Triangle’ – showcases chef David Yorkiston’s “really great cooking – way, way above typical gastroboozer fare”. “Controversially, it has banned kids under 10” but not everyone objects (“we think the atmosphere is all the better for it, even if it means we can’t go there as often as we’d like)”.
7. The Perry Hill
British, Modern restaurant in Perry Vale
78-80 Perry Hill - SE6
2023 Review: A welcome 2021 relaunch after being closed for years – this roadhouse on the South Circular between Sydenham and Catford serves “generous” dishes that “elevate it beyond pub grub, but without pretending to be a gastropub”. The food comes courtesy of Jamie Younger, who runs Peckham’s Begging Bowl and was formerly at the Palmerston in East Dulwich; his “smoked and slow-cooked options are a triumph (red chicken, short ribs)”. The “huge outdoor areas” make “weekend lunch en famille with toddlers a jolly affair” – a market sector enticed by a discount club for parents with young kids.
8. The Ivy Royal Tunbridge Wells
British, Modern restaurant in Tunbridge Wells
46-50 High Street - TN1
2023 Review: A “family favourite” for its “lovely atmosphere and brasserie food” – and handily close to Tunbridge Wells station – this spin-off from the ever-expanding Ivy operation is well regarded by most reporters, but also suffers from the complaints commonly levelled against its Identikit siblings: most especially indifferent cooking that’s “poor value for money”.
9. Gravetye Manor
British, Modern restaurant in East Grinstead
Vowels Lane - RH19
“The stunning glass-fronted dining room looks out onto the lovely garden” at this “quite magnificent spot” – a “rather splendid” Elizabethan manor house “steeped in history”, amidst 35 acres “of great horticultural interest” that were laid out in the 1880s. The building has been a hotel since 1958, and the very contemporary dining room was added in 2019 – “just glorious on all levels”; “a fabulous summer experience” in particular; and “perfect for a romantic interlude”. All reviews also attest to its “sublime food and super service”, which we’ve rated on the basis of our annual diners’ poll despite new Executive Head Chef, Martin Carabott joining in March 2025 as it was in progress. “With fresh vegetables and fruit from their extensive kitchen garden, it’s a very high quality experience indeed”. One of this year’s worst reviews? “Not sure it’s really worth the money, but it’s always a great occasion”. Top Menu Tip – “particularly good langoustine tartare”.
10. The Rosendale
British, Modern restaurant in Dulwich
65 Rosendale Road - SE21
2024 Review: “Brilliant pub grub” wins a nod at this Victorian former coaching inn in West Dulwich, with plenty of outdoor space that is covered and heated in winter. It’s family-friendly, so gets “a bit noisy” at times.
11. The Cat Inn
British, Modern restaurant in West Hoathly
North Lane - RH19
“Absolutely lovely” 16th-century freehouse on the edge of Ashdown Forest, with “very reliable and friendly staff, a specials board that’s always worth checking” and “the best Sunday roast in quite a while” (much of the produce is grown at Courtlands nursery, a mile or so away).
12. Franklins
British, Modern restaurant in East Dulwich
157 Lordship Ln - SE22
“Old pub – now a neighbourhood bar/bistro” of over a quarter century’s standing in East Dulwich, which is “owned by locals and loved by locals for its friendly pub-style ambience but restaurant-level cooking”, its “friendly and helpful staff, and great vibe”. Top Menu Tips – “it’s one of the few places to offer savouries as well as ice cream and desserts”; “Sunday roasts and daily fish and vegetarian specials are fab”.
13. The Swan
British, Modern restaurant in West Malling
35 Swan St - ME19
This “independently owned and managed” old village inn “in a lovely setting” has been thoroughly stripped out and modernised, providing a comfortable venue for an upbeat menu that features oysters, Cornish caviar and a 500kg Chateaubriand steak to share.
14. Park's Edge Bar & Kitchen
British, Modern restaurant in Southwark
49 Norwood Road - SE24
Well-priced Korean restaurant on Ealing Broadway (with an uncommented-on year-old spin-off in Ravenscourt Park), offering a range of tasty bibimbap and bulgogi dishes with a soup starter and kimchi on the side for £18.95, alongside plenty of appetizers, stews and noodle options.
15. Llewelyn's
British, Modern restaurant in Lambeth
293-295 Railton Rd - SE24
This “perfect neighbourhood restaurant that consistently cooks to a really high standard” occupies an attractive glass-fronted site opposite Herne Hill station, and goes from strength to strength under founder, hairdressing salon entrepreneur Katya Milavic-Davies and exec chef Lasse Petersen, who began his professional life as the drummer in post-punk band The Rakes.
16. Elodie, Birch Selsdon
British, Modern restaurant in Croydon
126 Addington Road - CR2
2024 Review: A sibling to Birch in Cheshunt, set in a very large, 18th-century mansion in 200 acres which follows a similar formula combining hotel, club and co-working space. The top culinary attraction is this dining room in the heart of the old property offering foraged fine dining from ex-Typing Room chef, Lee Westcott. It opened in August 2023 (after our annual diners’ poll had concluded) and offers a five-course tasting menu for £69 per person (with a wine pairing at £49 per person). There is also Vervain: an all-day brasserie (plus three bars, a spa, and Lido).
17. Dorothy & Marshall
British, Modern restaurant in
Bromley Old Town Hall, 4 Court Street - BR1
2024 Review: “A super addition to Bromley” – the borough’s old Town Hall has had £20m spent on a refit as a boutique hotel, complete with this new landmark dining room which launched in late 2022: an imposing chamber, with a soaring vaulted ceiling, wood-panelled walls and clerestory windows. It serves a menu of British classics, and is aiming to be a linchpin of the area. Our early feedback (and press reports) are up-and-down: one reporter liked the “very friendly staff and great building”, but thought “the menu needs to be a little more adventurous”. Another was “slightly disappointed all round, but went shortly after it opened and they were obviously still ironing out stuff”. (Both comments have echoes of Grace Dent’s review in The Guardian: “a gorgeous space…with a brief menu… service is delightful… prompt and friendly, but it’s hard to regard the place as much more than a cafe”).
18. Tallow
British, Modern restaurant in Southborough
15a Church Road - TN4
“Still a favourite in Tunbridge Wells by a mile” – Rob & Donna Taylor’s Southborough five-year-old occupies an attractive site and “is that rare treat – a top restaurant in Kent!”. The “staff are so sweet and friendly and always know so much about the menu” that it creates a “lovely, warm and relaxed atmosphere” and the food itself is “very thoughtful and well-prepared from a monthly-changing menu”. Dishes are priced individually à la carte, or you can order a tasting selection for £90 per person and there are “excellent matching wines”.
19. Bowley’s at The Plough
British, Modern restaurant in Trottiscliffe
6 Taylors Lane - ME19
“Superlative food from an aspiring young chef” draws an appreciative crowd to this community-owned pub in a “lovely Kent village” – Alex Yates sends out “notably creative dishes chosen for flavour not curiosity”, while his wife Grace heads the “friendly, engaged and well-informed” FOH team. It’s very much a family operation: his father David, a former Balls Bros wine merchant, advises on a drinks list which offers “strikingly restrained prices”, while his grandmother provided the name – her family, the Bowleys, ran pubs in Kent. Top Menu Tip – “guinea fowl with an outstanding jus”.
20. Wilson's
British, Modern restaurant in Lewisham
77 Ladywell Road - SE13
“A great addition to Ladywell” in southeast London – this “very good local restaurant” has quickly built a solid reputation for its bistro-style menu. Launched in 2024 by local couple Alina & Joel Falconer, who are also behind sustainable food shop Plenty next door and coffee shop Oscar’s opposite.
