Summary

After eight years at The Compassess Inn in Crundale, Rob and Donna Taylor moved on to open this 26-cover bistro near Tunbridge Wells in November 2021. Both Grace Dent in The Guardian and Marina O’Loughlin in The Sunday Times are fans, so we can likely expect both of their takes on this new arrival.

For 31 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"We have been for the change of menu 3 times now and every menu has been fresh, unique, stunning and flavour packed dishes! We booked the private dining room for 8 people and it was lovely, a well versed waiting staff served us and talk through each dish which was lovely! The kitchen staff are always happy to say hi as you catch their eye at the top of the stairs, the dishes are different on each course and they really complimented the beautiful food. Downstairs the ambiance is electric, staff smiling as the glide down from the kitchen, ice buckets for the delicious Gusbourne wines and always happy to greet us on arrival! We have a real love for this place and always highly recommend it to anyone that will listen! This isn’t a run of the mill restaurant, this is a special place with something real special to offer! We WILL be back"

"We have been a few times since the new owners took over and we have been blown away every time!!! The menu change every month is absolutely fantastic as it makes me want to book every month to try the culinary masterpieces that Rob and the team create! This place is so cozy, a real nook that feels like you are stepping off the road and into a restaurant from a novel! We have since booked the private dining area and can’t wait to visit for that! The food is so well thought out and the flavours are explosive, they just keep you wanting more. The staff there are lovely, you see them gliding effortlessly up and down the stairs as they deliver food to the guests, it’s a nice surprise to be able to say hi to the chef as you pop upstairs to the loo which smells delightful! So all in all this place is somewhat special and will be our once a month restaurant to visit! Highly recommend"

"We ate here not long after it opened on a midweek evening and were very impressed, went back for lunch a couple of days ago and were even more impressed. That said we happen to be fans of the small eating area and limited menu, what is important is what you eat. All of us could have eaten any of the selections but special mention has to go to the artichoke pie. All the dishes had changed with the season in the couple of months between this visits. Just a lovely place to eat."

"My husband & I went dinned here to celebrate his birthday. To book the restaurant, it is not as easy as you might think if you are using a mobile device. However, you are sent a reminder email 48 hours before your reservation asking you to confirm or cancel, which is a perfect idea. The food is exemplary although there was only a choice of three dishes on each course, but we both enjoyed what we ate. The wine list had lots of variety, including English wines, and they also stocked a number of different gins. We were advised the tasting menu was not in operation, which was a pity. I would have scored them five if there had been more interaction when our waitress served our food. I have scored the service three as there was a long wait before we were given our drinks and amuse buse and immediately then served our starter. I also marked the restaurant ambience as three as there seemed to be little regard for other dinners as it was very noisy, and we didn't particularly want to hear other diners conversations but tables on either side of us were particularly boisterous."
