1. Lambs British, Modern restaurant in Stratford upon Avon 12 Sheep Street - CV37
Occupying “a beautiful old building” – one of Stratford’s oldest – this beamed venue remains most often nominated as “a fantastic place for pre-theatre dinner: consistent quality with a great-value set menu”.
2. No. 9 British, Modern restaurant in Stratford upon Avon 9 Church Street - CV37
“Imaginative and excellent-value pre/post-theatre menus” (as well as more relaxed dining options for those giving Shakespeare a miss), are to be had at chef/owner Wayne Thomson’s highly rated town-centre venue, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this summer.
3. The Opposition British, Modern restaurant in Stratford upon Avon 13 Sheep Street - CV37
Just a stone’s throw away from the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, you will find a thoroughly modern, bustling bistro – The Opposition. For over 20 years, The Opposition, or “Oppo” as it is affectionately known by locals and theatre goers, has been one...
4. The Cross at Kenilworth British, Modern restaurant in Kenilworth 16 New St - CV8
“Although it looks just like a village pub from the outside” and has an agreeably “unassuming” approach, Andreas Antona’s well-accoladed venture “maintains extremely high standards” – “way better than just posh pub food”. “Chef Adam Bennett and his very able staff do not put a single foot wrong” and this “is a fine restaurant” with “some exquisite cooking and presentation” and “an Interesting wine list with a wide range including some top vintages available by the glass”. “After 94 (and counting) visits, it’s a great place to have just up the road and a real joy to visit!”
5. La Coppola Italian restaurant in Leamington Spa 14 The Parade - CV32
This “excellent” – if “slightly camp” – “old-school Italian” moved into ornately decorated new premises in January 2019, with the addition of an oyster bar (“daily seafood displayed on ice tempting you with plump oysters and delicate fizz!”). Regulars reckon it’s now “even better than ever” – a “magic little corner of Italy in the heart of Warwickshire”. Part of a local group, it has sibling venues in Leamington and Warwick.
6. Baraset Barn British, Modern restaurant in Alveston Pimlico Lane - CV37
This “exceptional” venue – part 200-year-old country pub, part contemporary brasserie – has an eclectic menu of global dishes and is “always super value for a leisurely lunch”. It “now has very good rooms for overnighters”.
7. The Royal Oak British, Modern restaurant in Whatcote 2 Upper Farm Barn - CV36
“Well worth a slightly twisty drive” – this “beautifully modernised little place” on the edge of the Cotswolds was re-launched a couple of years ago by the team formerly at The Chef’s Dozen in Chipping Campden, and has won a major reputation for its “really first class cooking” – “unusual dishes, all sourced with local ingredients” and “particularly game” (shot to order). In October 2019, Michelin awarded it a star.
8. The Castle at Edgehill British, Modern restaurant in Edgehill Main Street - OX15
“Fantastic views” over the Warwickshire countryside (and a famous battleground from the English Civil War) from an “interesting building” are an immediate draw at this cosy, picture-book castle – a pub since 1822 and built 100 years earlier. Service is “friendly” and the “competent” gastropub menu majors in a selection of steaks and burgers.
9. Sabai Sabai Thai restaurant in Stratford upon Avon 19-20 Wood Street - CV37
Brum’s popular Thai mini-chain established this Stratford spin-off three years ago, and its consistent food rating is in line with its siblings. “Charming staff” also received a particular thumbs up this year.
10. The Tame Hare British, Modern restaurant in Leamington Spa 97 Warwick Street - CV32
“Pleasant and friendly” venue off the main drag: modern British dishes are “clearly made with both love and knowledge” in the semi-open kitchen, and “it’s good to interact with the chefs as they serve a course”; reasonable prices too.
