Featured Warwickshire Restaurants
. The Cross at Kenilworth
British, Modern restaurant in Kenilworth
16 New St - CV8
This “good-looking” spin-off from Andreas Antona’s suave Simpsons in Birmingham features “faultless food” from talented chef Adam Bennett – and it’s certainly “more restaurant than pub” these days. There is one consistent grumble however: there’s “an intelligent and wide-ranging wine list, but one or two less expensive bottles wouldn’t go amiss”.
. The Royal Oak
British, Modern restaurant in Shipston-on-Stour
2 Upper Farm Barn, Whatcote - CV36
“The Cravens, previously at The Chef’s Dozen in Chipping Campden, have moved to this small village near Shipston on Stour” and occupy this “comfortable” and “airy” conversion of one of England’s oldest pubs (est. 1168). “Richard is still the best chef in the area” according to a number of reports, with a heavy focus on seasonal game bartered with locals or shipped in from Scotland. His South African-born wife Solanche is responsible for an SA-heavy wine list (there’s also pigeon biltong).
British, Modern restaurant in Warwick
22 Market place - CV34
Fishmonger, butcher, casino and tailor (hence the name), this “small and personal” venue has had many lives, and in its ten-year-old restaurant incarnation now turns out “lovely” and “attractive” food of a fine, seasonal bent.
. The Tame Hare
British, Modern restaurant in Leamington Spa
97 Warwick Street - CV32
An ambitious three-year-old “slightly off the main drag in town, but worth seeking out” for the “best (British with a twist) cooking in Leamington”; in autumn 2018 they launched a new tapas-style menu, and prices are apparently “a total steal for food this good”.
British, Modern restaurant in Stratford-Upon-Avon
8 Church St - CV37
“Just what Stratford needed” – this “very promising”, crowdsource-funded yearling opened in one of the town’s half-timbered houses in March 2017 “and quickly became a favourite”. “I’ve dined there 16 times in first 12 months, and chef Paul Foster has produced excellent food time after time by simply focusing on flavour and the best seasonal ingredients”. In October 2018, his hard work was rewarded with a Michelin star.
. La Coppola
Italian restaurant in Leamington Spa
14 The Parade - CV32
A “fantastic”, dramatically decorated Italian, with two local siblings, that continues to win raves for its “excellent” food (including “fish done the Italian way”); sadly, the trio went into administration in 2017 – subsequently extended to spring 2019 – so the future looks uncertain.
