Featured South Yorkshire Restaurants
1. Losehill House Hotel & Spa British, Modern restaurant in Hope Valley Losehill Lane, Edale Road - S33
“Beautifully presented, tasty food, excellent service and beautiful views” win praise for this characterful hotel in the Peak District National Park. You can choose between a three-course menu for £50 or go the whole hog and have seven courses for £65. It’s also a hit for afternoon tea: “love this place at any time, but you get great vistas from the orangery in the afternoon.”
2. Rafters British, Modern restaurant in Sheffield 220 Oakbrook Rd, Nether Grn - S11
“Still one of the best”, Tom Lawson & Alistair Myers’s ambitious, small upstairs dining room, ten minutes from the city-centre (and named for its main architectural features) is a “Sheffield gem” combining “excellent service” with “brilliant” modern British cuisine. “The ‘Experience’ label (used to describe its more elaborate weekend menus) is a tad pretentious”, but that’s the only complaint.
3. Clam & Cork Fish & seafood restaurant in Doncaster 2 Fish Market - DN1
“Sitting up at a bar in Doncaster Fish Market may not sound like the last word in fun”, but this brave two-year-old “is the kind of place that is usual in Barcelona and Lisbon, but a wonderful gift to my part of the world”, with its zingy small plates of fish curries and top quality seafood; “let’s have some more like this!”
4. Vero Gusto Italian restaurant in Sheffield 12 Norfolk Row - S1
“Sheffield’s best Italian” – “this small, family-run, city-centre fixture stands out for its delicious, authentic food and friendly atmosphere” – and is “packed from early on Fridays” for good reason: “genuine Italian bustle and lots of classic dishes served very much to standard”.
5. Joro Scandinavian restaurant in Sheffield 294 Shalesmoor - S3
“Such a great addition to the Sheffield scene” – Luke & Stacey Sherwood-French’s “extraordinary conversion of a shipping container” provides some “outstanding” cuisine with its selection of ‘hyper-seasonal’ small plates, available also as part of ten-course (£65) or twelve-course (£75) tasting menus: “the food’s so exciting… the opposite of style over substance”.
6. Street Food Chef Mexican/TexMex restaurant in Sheffield 90 Arundel St - S1
“Very cheap Mexican near the station” – you can “always taste something new” (besides burritos, tacos, nachos et al) at this well-established cantina, which also now has a Sharrow Vale Road sibling.
7. The Old Vicarage British, Modern restaurant in Ridgeway Village
2018 Review: Tessa Bramley’s comfortable Victorian country house dining room has been an edge-of-town fixture for over 30 years – and, despite up-and-down reports on the service and cooking fronts in recent years, won consistent praise this year for “exceptional food in a lovely environment”. It’s had a recent makeover too.
8. Nonna’s Italian restaurant in Sheffield 535 - 541 Eccleshall Road - S11
Maurizio Mori’s long-established Italian (est. 1996) has earned its local popularity with “good food that’s consistently authentic” and “staff and an atmosphere that help improve your day”.
9. Silversmiths British, Modern restaurant in Sheffield 111 Arundel St - S1
2019 Review: “One of Sheffield’s old industrial spaces, converted into a comfortable restaurant with quirky style”, and going like a dream since the then ‘Runaway Girl’ featured on Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares in 2008; “they have a nicely considered menu with some interesting (Yorks-centric) choices”, and the fishcakes are a “classic well worth trying”.
10. Wong Ting restaurant in Sheffield
2017 Review: “The most authentic Chinese cooking in Sheffield” awaits at this “exceptionally good” city-centre venue; the menu is “not very varied, but very consistent” (“Top Tip – you need to ask for the Chinese menu if you want the real McCoy)”.
