Harden's says

In an unexpected location (a Sheffield shipping container), Jöro serves up "hyper-seasonal" fare in a small plates, snacks and tasting menus formula; the modern Scandinavian ("New Nordic") cuisine is even more unexpected. A brave move; we look forward to seeing the survey results.

“Blessed to have this in Sheffield… it is bold and surprising!” – Luke & Stacey Sherwood “go from strength to strength” at this linchpin of the city’s dining scene “set in a shipping container” and which opened in 2016. “When it comes to consistent, flavourful, creative food that’s technically clever without being pretentious, it’s hard to beat” and a number of reporters feel “it’s a mystery as to why it hasn’t got a Michelin star”. “A new, larger venue might help with the slight feeling of overcrowding” (“hopefully the restaurant will move to a larger location where the timings do not have to be so rigid”). Top Menu Tip – “their soft drinks pairings are the work of alchemy: matching dishes with unique skill”.

“World-class cooking”“a blisteringly good fusion of Nordic, Japanese and modern British ingredients and techniques” – continues to win ever-more renown for Luke & Stacey Sherwood-French’s “brilliant and imaginative” venue, in a “slightly cramped” converted shipping container (but see note below) “with a great playlist of music that you wouldn’t normally hear in a fine-dining restaurant!”. “It’s a travesty that this place hasn’t been awarded a Michelin star, as it’s definitely operating at that level and restaurants less deserving are awarded one (one guesses that the shipping container location has put off the traditionalist tyre men)”. “A light touch and high-end technique in the kitchen make unusual combinations feel natural”“every dish is a flavour bomb!” – while “inventive drinks flights showcase some bold pairings”. Watch this space, as a move is afoot to a new location in late 2022/early 2023, and the couple are also expanding their local empire (which includes House of Jöro, see also) with a new deli concept: Grocerant.

“Back, better and more creative than ever” – Luke & Stacey Sherwood-French’s unique, moodily lit converted shipping container is “a jewel – overlooked perhaps by some because it is in Sheffield, but now beginning to be recognised by a wider audience” for its ultra-seasonal, “amazing value” five-, eight- and ten-course tasting menus. Stop Press – in June 2021, the owners launched House of Jöro, a Nordic-inspired mini-boutique hotel with a 10-seater chef’s table just moments away from the restaurant.

“Such a great addition to the Sheffield scene” – Luke French & Stacey Sherwood-French’s “extraordinary conversion of a shipping container” provides some “outstanding” cuisine with its selection of ‘hyper-seasonal’ small plates, available also as part of ten-course (£65) or twelve-course (£75) tasting menus: “the food’s so exciting… the opposite of style over substance”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

What the Newspaper Critics are saying

The Times

Giles Coren humble-bragged that he was not the first but was possibly the last reviewer to visit this pocket-sized venue in a shipping container –  “the only restaurant in Britain that you enter through the loos” – that after eight years is finally about to move to appropriately swanky new premises at Oughtibridge Mill, on the edge of the Peak District.

“The vibe is faintly reminiscent of Gareth Ward’s revered Ynyshir in Ceredigion,” Giles reckoned, and he was fulsome in his praise of both the cooking and the “soft-drink pairing menu, which was revelatory” – “I left Sheffield stuffed and sober, delirious with the thrill of such good food for so little money and very excited about coming back to try the new place in the summer.”

Clearly going through what Doctor Johnson would diagnose as a “tired of life” phase, Giles concluded: “I have no use for London at the moment. Next week I’m in Oxford, the week after in Weymouth.
