This “quirky market stall” in the fishmarket is the place to go in Doncaster if you’re looking for fresh seafood, raw or cooked to order, and accompanied by a glass of champagne. There’s a chalked-up menu but, beyond the “excellent” food and drink, not much in the way of creature comforts. Top Tip – “try the fish curry”.

“Things are picking up in Doncaster” when you can find a great little seafood and champagne bar in the fishmarket. Good-quality, ultra-fresh fish and seafood is cooked to order in front of you at this three-year-old venture, and there’s not much on the chalked-up menu that costs over £10. The excellence of the food and service is agreed, but the ambience is “very difficult to rate because it’s rather uncomfortable sitting on stools and can be cold. They apparently have plans to expand”.

“Sitting up at a bar in Doncaster Fish Market may not sound like the last word in fun”, but this brave two-year-old “is the kind of place that is usual in Barcelona and Lisbon, but a wonderful gift to my part of the world”, with its zingy small plates of fish curries and top quality seafood; “let’s have some more like this!”

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
