International Restaurants in Oxfordshire
1. The Crooked Billet British, Modern restaurant in Stoke Row Newlands Ln - RG9
“A divine rural location and consistently excellent, seasonal food” have drawn celebs and ordinary mortals alike to former punk bass guitarist (John Otway, Sweet) Paul Clerihugh’s one-of-a-kind gastropub for 30 years. “We’ve eaten here maybe 350 times over two decades and I recall only one poor meal – what a standard to have maintained!”. Prices can be “a bit too steep”, but are easily justified “on a cloudless summer’s evening, when the whole experience is magical”.
2. The Magdalen Arms British, Modern restaurant in Oxford 243 Iffley Road - OX4
“Sunday roasts are legendary, with care lavished on the ingredients”, say fans of this well-known varsity gastropub – “a busy place” (some would say “too noisy to be enjoyable” when it’s “packed out”: i.e. often), which has just celebrated its 10th anniversary. But while it’s rated consistently well, even so it can seem a case of “much hype about nothing”, and its albeit good ratings are not in the same league as its famous stablemate, London’s Anchor & Hope.
3. The Coconut Tree International restaurant in Oxford 76 Saint Clement's Street - OX4
“A good-value array of Sri Lankan small plates” helps make for an “interesting” meal at this Sri Lankan street food operator: part of a south west England mini-chain, which has been in the City of dreaming spires for the last two years.
