German restaurant in King's Cross
1 King's Boulevard - N1
“A very ordinary restaurant in a lovely building occupying a prime position” is the reluctant conclusion on The Evolv Collection’s “crowded and noisy” tenure at this “grand” Victorian space (built in 1865 for the German Gymnastics Society), which seems content to rely on its “handy placement between King’s Cross and St Pancras stations” for custom. Even fans who find the German cuisine (“lots of sausages”) is “good and properly done” can say “it’s expensive TBH”; while to critics the menu “lacks passion” and the results end up “really rather uninspired and heavy”. It doesn’t help either that service can be “laughably bad”: staff can “struggle to keep up” or seem “very fed up (no chance of a smile although they did do their job)”. Top Tips – if paying for yourself, maybe “settle just for a drink handy to the trains”. If entertaining, “plenty of space on the upstairs tables can make for an excellent business lunch, handily placed”. Best meal here? “Superb German breakfast. No Americanisms”.
