Weeks after closing down at the end of last year, highly rated Northumbrian restaurant Hjem is making a comeback with a six-month residency at the South Causey Inn, starting on February 4.
The hotel residency, midway between Newcastle and Durham near Stanley, will fill the gap between the closure of Hjem and the opening later this year of its successor Freyja, a restaurant-with-rooms currently under construction on the Close Estate at Heddon-on-the-Wall.
Founded by Swedish-born chef Alex Nietosvuori and his Northumbrian wife Ally Thompson in 2019, Hjem rose to number 3 on the Harden’s 100 list of the UK’s best restaurants last year, with its Scandi-style cuisine hailed as ‘a sensory revelation’ and ‘a perfect balance of theatre and supremely creative cooking’. This year’s Harden’s guide advised diners to “hurry while it lasts” – an opportunity that has now been extended.
The name ‘Hjem’ plays on the similarity between the words for ‘home’ in Swedish and Northumbrian dialect.
