French Restaurants in Spitalfields
1. Chez Elles French restaurant in 45 Brick Ln - E1
“Like a rip in the fabric of space-time, transplanting a perfect Paris bistro to Brick Lane” – just the job for a quick French onion soup or plate of snails.
2. Galvin La Chapelle French restaurant in Spitalfields 35 Spital Sq - E1
The “breathtakingly magnificent” setting – “a Grade II listed girls’ school built in the late 19th century, with soaringly magnificent high ceilings and a plush fit-out” – makes the Galvin Brothers’ Spitalfields destination “a great place to celebrate or to take clients”, and is nowadays the City’s No 1 destination for business entertaining. And it helps that the service is “utterly professional, discreet and attentive”, too. When it comes to the “high-end, well-executed” Gallic cuisine, it has more often seemed a tad more “unambitious and rather expensive” of late (“I adore this restaurant, but they do need to keep the prices in check”). The winning view, though, is that “you always feel special when coming here” for what’s “an exceptional dining experience”.
3. Galvin Bistrot & Bar French restaurant in Spitalfields 35 Bishops Square - E1
“A lovely brasserie-style option at the rear of Galvin La Chapelle” – the Galvins keep reformatting the smallish unit adjacent to their landmark venue (previously Galvin HOP, RIP, and before that Café à Vin). This mid-2020 re-launch pays homage to the formula of their original ‘Bistrot de Luxe’, which launched their empire 15 years ago. “Very casual and lots of fun” – staff are “very friendly”; it has “a lovely outside space on the terrace with a cover”; and the cooking is “just what French bistro-style fare should be”.
