“Wow! I’m not a vegan but I was really impressed” say many fans of the “astonishingly good vegan food, mostly Sichuan”, at this fast-growing group where “the dishes are so full of flavour even meat-eating friends are now tofu converts”. The grub is “perfect not only for vegans but for anyone put off by Sichuan cuisine’s fondness for tripe, offal and the less-commonly-eaten parts of animals” – while vegetarians are “delighted to have so many options to choose from”. The dining rooms tend to be “overly bright and somewhat frenetic at busy times”, but they’re “great fun to visit with friends and order abundantly”.

“Fantastic vegan Sichuan food”“bursting with spices and tastes” – makes any one of this “deservedly popular” trio in Islington, Golders Green and Spitalfields Market (from the team behind omnivore Xi’an Impression) “a go-to place if you want to eat vegan with an Asian twist”. “Don’t go because it’s vegan, but because the food is just so good!”

This “great vegan” with branches in Islington, Golders Green and Spitalfields Market “beats the hell out of anything left in Chinatown” with its “interesting Chinese options”, full of “flavour and texture” and “leaning towards Sichuan peppercorns” (it’s from the team behind non-vegan Xi’an Impression). “Go with half-a-dozen friends so you can try plenty of dishes”“you won’t miss the meat”.

“Wonderfully yummy plant-based food with no compromise on flavour”“and so much more interesting than the standard Chinese offering” too – has made a big hit of this Islington yearling, whose mix of Sichuan, Cantonese and other influences make it “one of the best places ever!” It’s already on to branch number two, which opened in April 2022 – “a brilliant addition to Golders Green, all vegan and very tasty!”

For 34 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
