1. The Glenturret Lalique Restaurant
Scottish restaurant in Crieff
The Glenturret Distillery, The Hosh - PH7
“Outstanding in every way” is the comment most often made this year regarding this “wonderfully well-spaced” dining room which is emerging as one of Scotland’s most notable dining destinations. “An hour and a bit by car, to the north of Edinburgh it is a formal space” attached to Scotland’s oldest working distillery “whose starched white tablecloths, shining wine glasses, and attentive staff signal that this is a touch of France transported to the southern Highlands” (and whose sponsorship means you are also “surrounded by everything Lalique”). Chef Mark Donald and his team offer a multi-course dining experience priced at £220 per person. The cuisine “impresses with its imagination” (“throughout the seven courses tastes were fantastic and the presentation immaculate and imaginative”). Numerous reports also include “a special mention for the sommelier Julien Beltzung: the wine pairings are fascinating and deeply thought out and the recommendations for the non-paired guests spot on”. “Service generally combines utter professionalism with approachability – a large team seamlessly integrated resulting in an incredibly attentive (but in no way oppressive) service throughout”. “Well worth a long, long trip!” Top Menu Tip – “the amuse bouche are inspired… by far the best Michelin-starred amuse bouche any of us had ever had (and we are regular visitors to starred restaurants)”.
2. Aran Bakery
Sandwiches, cakes, etc restaurant in Dunkeld
2 Atholl Street - PH8
2022 Review: Great British Bake-Off’s youngest ever contestant, Flora Shedden (then just 19) runs this artisan bakery, housed in what was a derelict 200-year-old building in the heart of the community, and recently opened another venture across the road: well worth a visit should you be passing through on your way to the Highlands…
3. The North Port
British, Modern restaurant in Perth
8 North Port - PH1
2024 Review: This wood-paneled “gem” occupying a seventeenth-century building, from the husband-and-wife team of chef Andrew Moss & FOH Karen Milne, celebrates its 10th anniversary this year – the “exceptional cooking and wine list are a joy”. We’ve rated it on relatively thin feedback – more reports please.
4. Cafe Tabou
French restaurant in Perth
4 St John's Pl - PH1
2022 Review: This “little piece of France” – down to the terrace under a red awning along the streetfront – has earned a strong local reputation over more than a decade as a haven of classic Gallic cuisine.
5. Kinloch House
Scottish restaurant in Blairgowrie
Built in 1840, this “grand” Relais & Châteaux hotel sits on 25 acres of shooting country, and it’s “a pleasure to luxuriate there in the several lounges and well-stocked bar”. “Nothing much changes up here, in a good way”, with the “quite old-fashioned style of cooking” (mostly of local game and fish) “done well” and with “very attentive service” to match.
6. The Grandtully Hotel by Ballintaggart
Scottish restaurant in Grandtully
Beyond the Victorian exterior of a former railway hotel, Chris & Andy Rowley’s three-year-old venue (the brothers also own nearby Ballintaggart Farm) is contemporary and cosy in feel. It doesn’t inspire masses of feedback, but all to the effect that it provides “a very good meal accompanied by some interesting wines”. Typical of the menu: “a main of beautifully tender Creedy Carver duck with haggis and blueberry”.
7. Jon & Fernanda’s
British, Modern restaurant in Auchterarder
34 High Street - PH3
“What a find in Auchterarder, so close to Gleneagles”. “You can not fault the food, wine and service in this small and cosy, family run restaurant”. It’s a white-painted venue on the town’s main street whose straightforward menu is much more affordable than that down the road (with the likes of Hot Smoked Salmon, Chicken Supreme, Tenderloin of Venison and Eton Mess). For one of our diners, “it’s a go-to place when we are north of the border – if only it was closer to us in Cheshire!”
