Part of the Relais & Châteaux empire, a “lovely hotel with restaurant to match” that stands on 25 acres of parkland in prime shooting country – it’s “always a pleasure to revisit this traditional grand house and soak up the comfort in several lovely lounges and also the well-stocked bar”. Top Menu Tip – “the smoked salmon and the beef remain far and away the things to eat here”.

A “beautiful hotel” with “excellent service”, “well-prepared food using delicious local produce” and “staff who can find just what you want”. The menu plays to regional strengths, with highlights including local game – “in particular very good venison”. The only quibble comes from a diner who found the style “a little on the fussy side” (“the food has that slight Relais & Château over-the-topness”).

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"A grand house and a pleasure to luxuriate there in the several lounges and well-stocked bar. Very attentive service. Fine three-course dinners with a little choice at each course. Decent varied wine list."
