Featured Perth And Kinross Restaurants
1. Andrew Fairlie, Gleneagles Hotel French restaurant in Auchterarder
“Andrew is no longer with us… but the tasting menu is still perfect!!”. Head chef Stephen McLaughlin and general manager Dale Desbury have given their now-departed boss the best send-off they could by maintaining the “truly amazing food of the highest order and faultless service at this beautiful restaurant, whose incredibly good ‘Degustation’ menu is an excellent exhibition of skill and creativity” (eight courses for £155). The Michelin man agrees and in October 2019, maintained this famous (if windowless) chamber as Scotland’s only two star. (For afternoon tea, “there’s a lovely new venue in the Glendevon Room – where the G8 summit meeting was held many years ago – beautiful views across to the Ochil Hills. Expensive but delicious!”)
2. Monachyle Mhor British, Modern restaurant in Balquhidder
A perennial favourite since the 1990s – Tom Lewis’s boutique hotel near Rob Roy’s grave in the Trossachs wins rave reviews for the “delightful” meals prepared with produce grown or foraged on the property. Marysia Paszkowska heads the kitchen, while the Lewises also run a local bakery, a motel and a chippie under the Mhor banner.
3. Jon & Fernanda's British, Modern restaurant in Auchterarder 34 High Street - PH3
“Just down the road from Gleneagles Hotel” – and in its own mould “able to hold its own” with its more famous neighbour (where the proprietors used to work) – this “cosy” high street restaurant “ticks all the right boxes”, and is a big hit with all those who comment on it. It helps that it’s a fraction of the cost: the table d’hote menu offers a choice of six dishes for each course: two courses for £29.95 and three for £37.95.
4. Kinloch House Scottish restaurant in Blairgowrie
“With Dundee on the doorstep and the new V&A to visit”, this “perfect” country house hotel benefits from an “exceptional restaurant, service and comfort” too. The cooking, featuring fruit from nearby Blairgowrie and game from resident shooting parties, “shows flair and immaculate presentation”, while hotel manager “Paul, a man of skill and humour, always makes a stay special”.
5. Pig'Halle French restaurant in Perth 38 South St - PH2
2017 Review: “A real find in Perth that’s authentically French down to the pigs’ trotters!” – a simple and genuine bistro praised for its enjoyable fare.
6. The North Port British, Modern restaurant in Perth 8 North Port - PH1
Extensive dark-wood panelling and low ceilings help create a cosy, enveloping ambience at this small, traditional venture, run by Andrew Moss (chef) and Karen Milne (front of house). Highly acclaimed by Scottish press critics for its unhackneyed Scottish cuisine, a “good value lunch” is singled out for praise in our feedback.
7. 63 Tay Street Scottish restaurant in Perth 63 Tay St - PH2
Set up in 2007 by Slow Food aficionado Graeme Pallister, who trained at Kinloch House Hotel and the restaurant at Gleneagles, this elevated Scottish dining room, on the western banks of the Tay, remains a Perth gem that’s “exceptional value early evening”.
8. Barley Bree British, Modern restaurant in Muthill 6 Willoughby St - PH5
“Inventive French cuisine with fine Scottish produce”, and “wonderful service” too, make it worth taking a detour from Gleneagles (just down the road) to visit Fabrice & Alison Bouteloup’s “highly recommended restaurant-with-rooms”.
9. Cromlix British, Modern restaurant in Dunblane Kinbuck - FK15
2019 Review: Dour tennis ace Andy Murray’s “delightful refuge in the hills” occupies a fine Victorian building in tranquil grounds. There are fans of the glass-walled conservatory restaurant – “great cooking and a wine list to study for hours” – but also critics (for whom the “uninspired” food “did not live up to the big names behind it” – aka Albert Roux).
10. Cafe Tabou French restaurant in Perth 4 St John's Pl - PH1
“A tiny touch of France in the centre of Perth, Scotland!” – Marek Michalak’s “little gem” of a city-centre bistro is a “longtime good place” where “the à la carte menu changes seasonally but the daily specials are as they should be – wiped off the blackboard as they sell out. Specialities are steaks and seafood, and the wine list isn’t to be sniffed at either, and won’t break the bank”.
