“Possibly the most authentic Italian food in the north of England, and with no compromise to British ideas of what Italian food is” – this converted old cottage on the A59 is “somewhat reminiscent of an agriturismo, but casting its net over Italy, serving various cuisines rather than just one”. Maurizio Bocchi is the chef, while his wife Cinzia runs front of house, and “their knowledge of oils and wines is amazing” (“olive oil is a speciality verging on obsession and the all-Italian wine list is full of excellent wines you've never heard of, all at very fair prices”). “The food is hearty enough for a rural Lancastrian appetite” – “pastas, particularly the home made ones, are always excellent, fish is always very good, but meat tends to be overcooked in that curiously Italian manner”.

2. Italian Orchard Italian restaurant in Broughton 96 Whittingham Lane - PR3

“Expanding again to highlight how popular it is” – “this already vast Britalian restaurant on the outskirts of Preston has just added an enormous extension (primarily a bar) into which you could probably fit The Ritz’s dining room” – and “the whole operation is remarkable given its size”. It’s the “very good and reasonably priced food” that draws the crowds (“your favourite pizzas and pastas”) “but it’s the specials menu where the most interest lies”, plus “stuff they don't cook” – ie oysters and “Italian charcuterie imported direct from the owning Bragagnini family’s homeland in Friuli, as is much of the wine”.

2019 Review: “Ostensibly an Italian restaurant” – the Lioveri family’s fifteen-year-old fixture cooks “more in a modern British idiom” (although “there is a bit too much sous vide work, gels, foams and spherification to be really cutting edge”). “Apart from unnecessary modernist touches”, the “execution is excellent” and a meal far more “refined” than its unassuming exterior might suggest.
