2. The Star & Garter
British, Modern restaurant in East Dean
2023 Review: In the heart of the Goodwood Estate, this attractive looking inn benefits from a “large garden” and serves an menu of “imaginative” pub grub (although the “menu descriptions tend to the obscure!”).
3. The White Horse
British, Modern restaurant in Chilgrove
1 High St - PO18
2022 Review: Current owners The Epicurean Collection – behind a string of boutique pubs and inns – have a hit on their hands with this award-winning venture: a “worthy addition to an area generously supplied with high-quality country pubs”. The rolling South Downs beyond the windows inform much of the “imaginative menu”, with a particular accent on introducing non-shooting folk to game (the latter courtesy of the local Goodwood Estate).
4. Shoe Inn
British, Modern restaurant in Exton
Shoe Ln - SO32
2022 Review: “Have a lovely walk to work up an appetite” before visiting this laidback brick-walled boozer on the River Meon, handy for the South Downs Way, and with a “very nice little garden down by the brook”. To make sure of enjoying its “great” pubby staples “you need to book – even midweek – as it’s very popular”.
5. 36 on the Quay
British, Modern restaurant in Emsworth
47 South St - PO10
This “local gem on the quay” at Emsworth is “such an amazing restaurant”, with a reputation that stretches back over three decades – chef Gary Pearce joined the kitchen at 17 then worked abroad at Noma, Old Sluis and other grand venues before returning with his wife Martyna, eventually taking over from Ramon Farthing six years ago. There’s plenty of fish and seafood on the menu, as expected from the location, but also an unusual selection of Australian wagyu and Japanese Kobe beef.
6. Fat Olives
British, Modern restaurant in Emsworth
30 South St - PO10
Little changed over its 25 years in operation, Lawrence & Julia Murphy’s small, sweet bistro is a short walk up the main street from the waterfront in Emsworth, and occupies a 17th-century fisherman’s cottage. The motto under the logo is ‘Friendly Food, Tasty People’ and its accommodating service has always been a key feature, alongside well-priced, traditional-ish cuisine. For whatever reason, it failed to inspire the typical volume of feedback this year, but we’ve maintained its ratings from 2025 on the basis of its very consistent performance over more than two decades.
7. The Deck
British, Modern restaurant in Emsworth
Emsworth Marina, Thorney Road - PO10
2022 Review: Sailor-turned-entrepreneur Ed Collison set up his popular venue at Emsworth yacht basin at the age of 21 in 2016, serving everything from £4.50 bacon breakfast rolls to a splash-out seafood platter for two at £120 a pop. During lockdown he launched a fleet of silver catering vans, and in November 2021 announced a new branch of the Deck, replacing the Boat House Café, at Gosport marina.
8. The Earl of March
British, Traditional restaurant in Lavant
Lavant Rd - P018
2023 Review: With its “delightful setting looking out across the South Downs” – a view from the window said to have inspired William Blake’s anthem Jerusalem in 1803 – this eighteenth-century coaching inn is quite a draw, especially in summer when you can dine in the garden. The cooking is generally “creditable” (although both highs and lows were reported this year). The business has been owned since 2007 by Giles Thompson, formerly executive head chef at The Ritz. Jerusalem.
9. The Royal Oak
British, Modern restaurant in East Lavant
Pook Ln - PO18
2024 Review: This 200-year-old local pub at the foot of the South Downs is “well run and popular”, with a “well-executed and great-value menu” of superior gastropub fare.
10. Millstream Hotel
British, Modern restaurant in Bosham
“This old-fashioned hotel features two restaurants sharing a kitchen – the more upmarket Sea School and Marwick ’s Brasserie”. Set in three 17th-century cottages and a converted barn, the property has been owned by the Wild family for 50 years, with chef Neil Hiskey running the kitchen for half of that time. A classic afternoon tea is also offered in Markwick’s, so it’s very much “a place to take aged relatives”.
11. Farmer, Butcher, Chef
British, Modern restaurant in Chichester
Goodwood Estate - PO18
2022 Review: “The food is excellent, and you’re made to feel welcome” at this showcase for the produce of the Goodwood Estate, an early convert to organic farming (although Lord March, the Duke of Richmond, is better known as a petrol-head). “They’ve turned the courtyard into a lovely space”, and the highlight of the menu is the ‘butcher’s board’ sharing selection of various meat cuts.
12. The Horse Guards Inn
British, Traditional restaurant in Tillington
Upperton Rd - GU28
A “brilliant pub with delicious food, great service and a very special garden”, which is “everything you could hope to find” in a 350-year-old establishment on the edge of the Petworth estate, with “country-chic bedrooms”. There’s a “warm, welcoming atmosphere”, and “very fresh food” on a seasonal menu with “an innovative twist”.
13. Cassons Restaurant & Bar
British, Modern restaurant in Chichester
Arundel Road, Tangmere - PO18
As it heads into third decade, Viv Casson’s “slightly dated but cosy” restaurant (rustic, with exposed brick and many a beam) has long been known in these parts for its “lovely food and service”, which extends to regular themed dinners, including eight- or nine-course tasting menu nights.
14. E Street Bar & Grill
British, Modern restaurant in Petworth
New Street - GU28
“A very welcoming home from home feeling” underpins the appeal of this characterful venue, cutely located amidst the antique shops of this civilised small town. An upscale bistro/brasserie menu “tastes delicious and is locally sourced” and there’s also “an extensive wine list and cocktail list to choose from”. Top Menu Tips – “Lovely tender and generous portion of Wagyu beef croquette to start. The lamb rump had some really creative vegetable choices with an eastern hint”.
15. Nathan Marshall Clarke House
British, Modern restaurant in Liss
Farnham Road - GU33
A former courthouse with exposed beams plays host to this rustic and tiny European restaurant run by chef Nathan Marshall and FOH wife Evi, a “lovely lady” whose Hungarian roots sometimes inspire the fine-dining on the menu. On limited feedback this year, there were reports of some “delicious” dishes and as we went to press, demand for a table was so high that they were already fully booked for 2024! Top Tip – to circumvent the need to book way ahead, keep an eye on their Instagram account (@n.marshall_chef), where they sometimes advertise last-minute cancellations.
16. The Ship
restaurant in Old Alresford
Bishops Sutton Road - SO24
This August 2025 newcomer (opened too late for any feedback in our annual diners’ poll) occupies a converted 16th-century pub and is run by Kelly Shaw, a first-time publican, joined by chef Tristan Lee, previously chef-owner of the well-regarded Restaurant Tristan in Horsham (who has returned to the stoves after a two-year sabbatical). The aim is ‘not about chasing trends’ but an all-day kind of pub with food that’s ‘simple, seasonal and soulful’ from a short evolving menu (sample dishes include Spiced Monkfish with pakora; Pork Schnitzel with samphire and fennel remoulade; and Lemon Meringue Pie). There are also carefully curated beers, wines and cocktails.
17. The Horse & Groom
British, Modern restaurant in Chichester
2024 Review: Four miles from Chichester, and bordering the South Downs National Park, this 200-year-old pub-with-rooms is part proper boozer (upfront) and part tastefully arty restaurant offering ambitious gastrofare. Reporters this year praised the “warm ambience” and a “treat” of a menu that features some “standout courses” such as scallops and venison.
18. The Milbury
British, Modern restaurant in Beauworth
This “beautifully renovated” 17th-century free house “in a wonderful position on the South Downs” has been “transformed from a run-down pub to a welcoming local with fantastic food” under the ownership of Clive & Tanith Cummings (whose previous project, an abbey in France that they ran for 17 years, was the subject of Channel 4 property show ‘Escape to the Chateau DIY’). “The historic building is now thriving again, with a roaring fire to welcome customers on winter days, and a restaurant of design and character” that serves “proper, seriously lovely food, not gastropub fare”, from a “tapas-style menu”. It’s a family business, with son Lewis managing the bar and daughter Georgia the wine list.
19. The Hollist Arms
British, Modern restaurant in Lodsworth
2023 Review: This “excellent South Downs destination in a picture-perfect village” – “with fine, restaurant-quality cooking” from chef Jesse Bryson (ex-Noble Rot and Leroy) – “is flourishing for good reason”. The stone-built seventeenth-century pub was taken over in 2020 by Angus Davies, a former manager at Chez Bruce and Lorne.
20. Coppa Club Haslemere
British, Modern restaurant in Haslemere
The Georgian, High Street - GU27
“Love the ambience… no pressure to quit the table and nice to overlook the river” – such are the plus points of these flexible, comfortable and welcoming homes-from-home in the Home Counties and in London near Tower Bridge and in Putney. Celebration? Both locations also feature funky little Thames-side ‘igloos’ seating up to 8. Looking for great food too? Don’t bother! “Disappointment” is often registered regarding the salads, pizza and other very middle of the road fare – keep your celebrations as liquid as possible…
