“Even the bar snacks are exceptional” at star London chef (of restaurant Story) Tom Sellers’s smart country pub, which has a “very welcoming bar and delightful, elegant dining room” as well as, by all accounts, “superb, top-quality food”. A few miles north of Petworth, it’s “a bit off the beaten track but well worth the effort to visit”.
“Enjoy the bluebells on the way to this rather tucked away pub” – a “well-restored country inn” bought a few years ago by London über-chef Tom Sellers from its former owner, DJ Chris Evans, which “serves food in both the bar (with open fire) and, more formally, upstairs”. One reviewer found it “trying way too hard for a Michelin star”, but most of the many reports we received this year were full of praise for its “seriously high standard of cooking” and “enchanting staff”.
“The London foodie prophet behind Story”, Tom Sellers’s “charming, comfortable” pub “in the (very quiet) depths of the countryside” inspires a mixed rep. While it’s “arrogant” to some tastes (“the sense is that they’re overcharging by tapping into the local wealthy clientele”), others proclaim the “superb”, “metropolitan-standard” cooking as proof that, as per Story, it’s “really going for a star”.
“What was always the most delightful inn is now back with a new team”, since the November 2014 take-over by Tom Sellers of Bermondsey’s Story fame, and nowadays delivers “a stunning foodie experience” with “unbeatably accommodating service and the most incredible cooking”. Even ardent fans, though, can feel it’s perhaps “too expensive in its current guise”.
The kitchen is the operational engine and heartbeat of the Lickfold Inn and every element in each dish is prepared with the utmost precision and care. We pride ourselves on marrying traditional methods with cutting edge ideas and the state of the art equipment allows the passionate kitchen team to cook to the highest level. The end result is progressive, delicious-tasting food that captures the surrounding area.
The menu is comprised of dishes made entirely from ingredients that are sourced from local specialist suppliers and artisan producers. This fresh produce is used to create refined food, which relishes in being entirely provided by the surrounding area.
The pub, separate from the dining room, is open Wed-Sat, 11am until 11pm and serves our daily changing bar snacks menu between 12pm and 10pm. On Sundays, the bar is open from 11am-8.30pm.
