“Given the number of great country pubs within 20 minutes of Chichester, Horse Guards stands out for the quality and originality of the kitchen” (which delivers a short seasonal menu strong on local produce) but the setting is also “exceptional” – being a “stylishly rustic” 350-year-old pub with a clutch of rooms on the fringe of the Petworth estate (and with a “lovely peaceful garden” to take in the scenery).

“If only more pubs were like this” – a “perfect local”, on the edge of the Petworth estates, where “the food is largely locally sourced and much better than standard pub grub” (indeed, the “innovative daily changing menu” comes “from a chef who obviously cares”). Bonus points for the appealing garden, and there’s a “good atmosphere inside too, unless you’re in the overflow room”.

“A proper gastropub in a bucolic setting” – this “cosy” tavern on the edge of the Petworth estates sits in a quintessential village setting (complete with neighbouring post office, red phone box, and little lane to the church) and a meal often starts with a drink in the “lovely, large garden”. One of the most commented-on West Sussex destinations, it provides “a modern and eclectic menu”“not the normal selection you see in most pubs” – which results in “really delicious food made with top-quality seasonal ingredients”. (For example “hoglet stew in red wine sauce with feta cheese or superb salmon, cod and seafood with chorizo”.) All this plus “great beers” and a thoughtful wine selection.

It's “always a treat” to visit this “rustically stylish dining pub” just outside Petworth, whose “lovely” food is “beyond gastropub standards”. Even “if you are just having a beer and peanuts, their garden is a perfect place to while away the time being entertained by the happy chickens tearing around”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
