Indian Restaurants in Oxted
1. Babur
Indian restaurant in Forest Hill
119 Brockley Rise - SE23
“Love having such a unique Indian locally” – this “culinary stalwart of South East London is still going strong after nearly 40 years”. “Staff welcome you like an old friend” and chef Jiwan Lal’s cuisine is “at least as good as that of the West End’s fine dining establishments”, in the view of many locals; and “magnificent value for this level of cooking”. Top Tip – “good value buffet on the weekends”.
2. Indian Essence
Indian restaurant in Petts Wood
176-178 Petts Wood Rd - BR5
“Proving you don‘t need to be central London for outstanding Indian food” – this extremely popular outpost in the SE London ’burbs is “part of Atul Kochhar’s growing empire, serving modern Indian menus of top quality”: “amazing food from an excellent tasting menu, alongside a regular à la carte offering”. None of the many reports we receive has a bad word to say about the place, also acknowledging the “really good staff” and “great choice of drinks”. Regular live music too.
3. Chai Naasto
Indian restaurant in Beckenham
2 - 4 Fairfield Road - BR3
This suburban subcontinental offers an unusual take on Indian street food, having been set up by three brothers keen to pay homage to their grandmother’s cooking, inflected by her travels in Africa and Saudi Arabia; its “authentic” recipes attract nothing but positive reports.
4. Cinnamon Culture
Indian restaurant in Chislehurst
97 High St - BR7
This contemporary curry house wins solid ratings for its food, with unusual chef’s signature dishes including a mixed grill of achari ostrich filet, chicken tikka and lamb chop. Family-run, it transferred to Chislehurst after a decade in Plaistow Lane, Bromley.
5. Heritage
Indian restaurant in Dulwich
101 Rosendale Road - SE21
“A real winner” – “fine, inventive dishes” make it worth knowing about Dayashakar Sharmer’s Indian in the ’burbs of West Dulwich: a cut-above, both for its location and by the standards of modern local curry houses.
6. Dastaan
Indian restaurant in Ewell
447 Kingston Rd - KT19
“Breathtakingly outstanding dishes” have put this “top-notch Indian” in the outer southwestern ’burbs firmly on every curry-hound’s map over the past nine years – it justifies a “long drive”, or “makes a bumpy ride on the 406 bus worthwhile”. Ignore the modest Ewell shop front off the A3 Tolworth turn-off, you’ll find cooking of “the highest standard” that rivals the best in the West End – and “at a truly affordable price”.
7. Mirch Masala
Pakistani restaurant in Tooting
213 Upper Tooting Rd - SW17
“Always delicious”, this well-known Pakistani canteen on Tooting’s ‘curry corridor’ offers the “same fun and good-value food as it has for years”. A favourite of local boy-made-mayor Sadiq Khan (so come on foot or by public transport), it has an offshoot in Coulsdon, on London’s southern fringe.
8. Indian Room
Indian restaurant in Balham
59 Bedford Hill - SW12
2023 Review: “Very helpful staff” add to the appeal of this Balham High Street Indian, of over 15 years’ standing. Whether it should be a perennial inclusion in TripAdvisor’s top 10 London restaurants is debatable, but the (limited) feedback we receive says it’s worth a visit.
9. Everest Inn
Indian restaurant in Blackheath
41 Montpelier Vale - SE3
“The food never disappoints” at this better-than-standard Nepalese and Indian specialist on the edge of Blackheath Common. Notwithstanding the choices of artworks and wall hangings, the contemporary interior avoids the classic curry house look.
10. Indian Ocean
Indian restaurant in Wandsworth
214 Trinity Rd - SW17
“Very popular locally” for its “well-priced, high-quality food”, this old-school family-run curry house near Wandsworth Common has stood the test of time.
11. Kricket
Indian restaurant in Brixton
41-43 Atlantic Road - SW9
“Brilliant, innovative and constantly changing” – Will Bowlby & Rik Campbell’s “unfailingly interesting” street-food cafés provide “real Indian food… cooked by Brits” and inspire a large army of fans for this small group, which added a fourth Canary Wharf outlet in early 2024 (and has announced a fifth branch will be coming to Shoreditch at the end of the year). They have achieved an all-round success story: “super-friendly service” scores incredibly highly as does the “buzzy environment”. And in Soho, “the restaurant is now supplemented by the Soma Bar next door” with an array of funky cocktails.
12. Ganapati
Indian restaurant in Peckham
38 Holly Grove - SE15
After 20 years, Peckham pioneer Claire Fisher’s “refectory-style” venue “keeps on delivering wonderful South Indian food”, including “some cracking veg dishes, though it’s not all vegan by any means”. “We first went 16 years ago and it has remained consistent through all this time – the difference is that then it was a lone star in an area short of places to eat, now it’s one of many”. Top Menu Tip – “homemade paratha is a must”.
13. Baba G's
restaurant in Lambeth
Pop Brixton, 49 Brixton Station Road - SW9
2021 Review: “Everything here is great, but I totally loved the paneer burger” – an alternative to the best-selling bhangra burger on the menu of these popular pop-ups, in POP Brixton and now also Vinegar Yard, SE1. After over ten years in the game, the business shifted up a gear in May 2019 with the opening (flush with £300k of investment having won BBC2’s ‘My Million Pound Menu’) of the new forever-home listed here: a 50-seater in Camden Town’s Stables Market.
14. Balham Social
Indian restaurant in Balham
2 Station Parade Road, Balham High Road - SW12
“A heady mix of cocktails and curry, with friendly and informative staff” – this contemporary Indian on the site of former Balham favourite Lamberts (RIP) operates as a café by day but is “noisily popular in the evening”, when it serves for “very good dishes with a modern and innovative twist on Indian favourites” in “an attractively decorated setting”.
15. Kokum
Indian restaurant in Dulwich
58 East Dulwich Road - SE22
“Definitely better than your average Indian” – this East Dulwich yearling opened in August 2023 and is the work of Sanjay Gour and Simeron Lily Patel, who have other outlying hits in the form of Ewell’s Dastaan and Sheen’s Black Salt (see also). According to one SE22 resident “it’s certainly the best (and most lauded, rightfully) suburban launch we can think of in the SE postcodes” and generated a large volume of feedback in our annual diners’ poll. “If you’re looking for a bland korma you won’t find it here” – Chef Manmeet Singh Bali’s food is “unusual, if not necessarily hugely authentic, and deliciously spicy. Meanwhile the cocktails are phenomenal for Zone 2!”
