Solid if arguably “fairly standard” Thai dishes again win a good rating for this branch of Torquil & Juree Chidwick’s small group, which they’ve created over 20 years on the promise of ‘The True Taste of Thailand’. Top Tip – competitively priced lunch and pre-theatre deal for £17.95.

2. The Woodsman British, Modern restaurant in Stratford upon Avon Chapel Street - CV37

“Excellent game – particularly venison, cooked to perfection over an open flame” – is the prime attraction at this Grade II listed building, which was standing in Stratford when Shakespeare was a boy. Wild-food specialist Mike Robinson presides over the kitchen, where game from their own estate and produce from their own botanical and herb garden is cooked over charcoal or wood (mostly oak and elder). Top Tip – “we’ve had Xmas lunch here for the last few years: always wonderful!”.

3. The Mount by Glynn Purnell British, Modern restaurant in Henley-in-Arden 97 High Street - B95

Glynn Purnell’s three-year-old operation has a bright, modern interior that’s in contrast to the period building it inhabits on an attractive high street and is hailed by its biggest fans as “a great pub where food, drinks and service are all very good”. As with last year, though, its ratings in general are middling and dragged further down by the odd more critical report.

4. The Black Swan restaurant in Henley-in-Arden 23 High Street - B95

Solid initial ratings in our annual diners’ poll for this Grade II-listed, Tudor-fronted hostelry in Shakespeare country, which was extensively renovated by Heartwood Inns and relaunched in late 2023. It now boasts a new oak-framed extension, and an attractive outdoor space leading to a stream, alongside a solid range of pub fare.
