International Restaurants in York
1. Skosh British, Modern restaurant in York 98 Micklegate - YO1
“It’s worth getting one of the counter tables so you can watch the chefs work” at Neil Bentinck’s “go-to”, small, city-centre destination – one of the top three most commented-on destinations in this decidedly foodie city. “It is a place people rave about and once you have been, you become part of a community where your mind is blown by the flavour combinations that Neil and his team bring together” – “amazing, amazing, amazing!". “You could describe it as British-Japanese fusion” (‘Skosh’ is Japanese for ‘small amount’) – “very inventive using local ingredients and exceptional for the price”. “It’s a convivial place with friendly staff” too (“walking in and sitting down for dinner is almost like being at a friend’s house – relax and laugh out loud, like there are no strangers around”). Top Menu Tips – “the ‘egg’ is divine as a pre-starter and the buttermilk chicken is to die for (but the vegetables are also treated with care and respect to make excellent dishes in their own right)”. (In late 2021 an application was put in to expand the restaurant, and Neil hinted in a May 2022 Yorkshire Post article that change is coming some time soon).
2. Mannion & Co British, Modern restaurant in York 1 Blake St - YO1
“A wonderful breakfast with local produce” is to be found at this popular and highly rated deli/café, with a restored Tudor frontage, which the Mannion family first opened as a grocer’s over three decades ago. At other times, charcuterie boards and cheese slates come from the deli counter are the order of the day.
3. The Rattle Owl International restaurant in York 104 Micklegate - YO16
“A great find in York with superb food paired expertly with wines for a great dining experience” – this Grade II-listed seventeenth-century building in York’s historic centre took two years to renovate when it was opened eight years ago. Chef Tom Heywood provides a four-course and eight-course menu and his cooking is highly rated by reporters. One quibble though – “service is knowledgeable but can be terribly slow”.
4. The Dawnay Arms International restaurant in Newton On Ouse
“Whilst walking in the area, dropped in for lunch without prior knowledge – what a gem!". Kerry & Martel Smith’s rustic gastropub by the River Ouse, is consistently well rated. “The ambience and friendly welcome make it immediately a winner and that’s cemented with the tremendous cuisine”.
5. The Blue Barbakan Polish restaurant in York 34 Fossgate - YO1
This “cosy, traditionally decorated Polish restaurant in Fossgate” with “very friendly and helpful staff” serves “excellent, heart-warming Polish food” – pierogi dumplings, bigos stew and more – alongside a few excursions into east and western Europe and a classic range of proper breakfast dishes.
