Summary
“Very reliable” through three decades, Michael & Lucy Hjort’s modern British venue near the city walls has a “fantastic menu” – including a “lovely selection of experimental hors d’oeuvres”. “More flashy and fashionable restaurants come and go in York, but Melton’s consistency, excellent locally sourced food and fabulous wine list make it a favourite.” Local lad Michael trained under the Roux brothers before heading home. He also owns the Walmgate Ale House and is the long-time artistic director of the York Food Festival.

Summary
This “utterly reliable destination in a terrace house just outside the city walls” (towards the racecourse) has been a “local restaurant of choice” for almost 30 years. “Often forgotten amongst the new openings in York, it remains one of the best addresses in the city, with great food and intelligent wines”. Chef-proprietor Michael Hjort trained with the Roux Brothers in the 1980s before returning to his home city; he is now part of the gastronomic establishment as director of York Food Festival and owner of the Walmgate Ale House and, most recently, the Chopping Block above it.
Summary
“In an old terraced house outside the main city centre” (just beyond the city walls), this “unpretentious” restaurant has long been a mainstay of York’s dining scene and, despite being “away from the tourist traps”, continues to be one of the city’s best-known destinations. There are lunch and early evening deals as well as à la carte and tasting options (5 courses for £50), and there’s “a great value wine list” too. The aim is not for experimental cuisine, but “they keep things up to date”, and “there’s a strong emphasis on local produce”. Results are “consistently excellent” and “expertly presented”.
