“Exceptional breakfasts” and “wonderful coffee and cake” are the big draws at this deli/café with a restored Tudor frontage, which the Mannion family originally opened as a grocer’s more than 30 years ago. It’s also a “perfect spot for brunch, with a courtyard outside – the food is of a very high standard and the specials board changes weekly”. There’s now a spin-off in Helmsley.

“Breakfast never disappoints” at this artisanal deli and café in a former greengrocer’s where you’ll find “consistently good” snacks and brunch fare spanning sarnies and quirkier options (“like in New Zealand”). “Be prepared to table share” and don't miss the walled garden out back. The “charming” four-year-old Hemlsley spin-off is also a hit.

Andrew Burton’s rustic-chic former greengrocer’s turned café, deli and artisan bakery, with a two-year-old spin-off in Helmsley. You “can be cheek by jowl” with your neighbours, but the victuals (grazing platters, sausage rolls, stuffed sandwiches) make it “far better than the chains”. Top Tip: much-nominated for its excellent breakfasts.

For 31 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
