Spanish Restaurants in Greater Manchester
1. El Gato Negro Spanish restaurant in Manchester 52 King Street - M2
“Deservedly Manchester’s top destination” – this “vibrant” operation (which made the move into town from Ripponden three years ago) delivers a superb all-round experience. “It’s the buzzing ambience of this multi-level townhouse and the great cocktails that really seal its appeal” though: “their sherry-tinged takes on an Old Fashioned and Espresso Martini make for a heady evening and the bar operation is slick, further boosting the vibe”. Quibbles? – service under pressure can be “slightly chaotic”. And although many diners say the tapas “is to die for”, one or two reporters feel its repertoire is “classic” rather than utterly inspirational.
2. Bar San Juan Spanish restaurant in Manchester 56 Beech Rd - M21
This “consistently fab, tiny tapas bar” on a Chorlton backstreet provides “a top, authentic Spanish experience” – and “attracts diners from Manchester and beyond”. “The long queue to get in is all part of the fun!”
3. Evuna Spanish restaurant in Manchester 277 - 279 Deansgate - M3
“Tapas as it should be” still gets a firm nod for this pioneer of Spanish food and wine in Manchester, a fixture on Deansgate for the past two decades. “The perfect setting for a romantic get-together or date”, it “gets very busy” at times. A fourth branch opened in Altrincham in early 2019.
4. Tast Cuina Catalana Spanish restaurant in Manchester 20-22 King Street - M2
“A fantastic addition to Manchester’s burgeoning Spanish scene” – chef Paco Perez opened this Catalonian yearling with a bit of help from Pep Guardiola and other Man City grandees. “It’s a few doors down from El Gato Negro and must be giving it a run for its money, although it could certainly be argued that they’re so different in both style and food that, apart from both being restaurants, they’re hardly direct competitors”. Reports mostly are enthusiastic about its “modern and flavoursome” Catalan small plates (‘Tastets’ – ‘more complex than tapas but smaller than a plate’), but also note that they’re “not cheap”. There’s also an “interesting, if surprisingly brief Catalan wine list, with prices that accelerate nearly as fast as a Manchester City player’s Lamborghini!”
5. La Bandera Spanish restaurant in Manchester 2 Ridgefield - M2
2018 Review: Basque maestro Josetxo Arrieta’s funky looking three-year-old off Deansgate, lined with eye-catching yellow leather booths, again divides opinion – one former fan feels it’s “lost the plot”, but others vaunt the “excellent” Spanish cuisine (primarily “very good tapas”).
6. Evuna Northern Quarter Spanish restaurant in Manchester 79 Thomas Street - M4
As well as two branches in Manchester, Evuna is open in Knutsford and Altrincham too.
7. El Rincon de Rafa Spanish restaurant in Manchester 244 Deansgate - M3
This basement tapas joint off Deansgate has been going for decades; the owner, Rafael Cabrera-Vargas, is a former footballer from Malaga.
