Featured Vauxhall Restaurants
1. Italo
Italian restaurant in Lambeth
13 Bonnington Square - SW8
2021 Review: “Grab a seat outside either at the counter shelf or at one of the tables” of this eleven-year-old deli “in an off-the-beaten track, verdant garden square in Vauxhall” for an authentic lunchtime treat from a short Italian menu. In colder weather you eat inside at a few closely-packed tables surrounded by shelves of produce.
2. Brunswick House Café
British, Modern restaurant in Vauxhall
30 Wandsworth Rd - SW8
A “quirky” but “gorgeous restaurant in a listed building” surrounded by modern skyscrapers – this “Vauxhall institution” occupies a much-chandeliered showroom of architectural antiques (run by LASSCO), which adds a unique sense of occasion to chef Jackson Boxer’s “assured” and “interesting” preparation of “modern British classics”. “Quiet and serene, with a diverse and older crowd of a lunchtime – it’s buzzing and vibrant with a younger clubbier crowd on a weekend”. Top Tip – “the Dexter beef and bone marrow tartare with shallots is the best steak tartare in London”.
3. Kennington Tandoori
Indian restaurant in Kennington
313 Kennington Rd - SE11
Celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2025, this well-established fixture serves “decent food that’s just a little smarter than average”. It has attracted plenty of useful publicity over the years thanks to high-profile patronage by politicians from both sides of nearby Parliament (Brown, Prescott, Cameron, BoJo), who refer to it as ‘the KT’. Keen Westminster-watchers will be interested to note how many newbie MPs beat a path to its door this year...
4. Gandhi’s
Indian restaurant in Kennington
347 Kennington Rd - SE11
This “enjoyable” if “typical local curry house” in Kennington was opened by Zalal Uddin in 1982 and is still family-owned. It makes the most of its proximity to the Oval – offering “very good service in trying, post-cricket, circumstances” – and to Parliament, which makes it a “good bet for MP-spotting”.
5. The Garden Cafe, Garden Museum
British, Modern restaurant in Lambeth
5 Lambeth Palace Rd - SE1
This quietly ambitious kitchen at Lambeth’s Garden Museum is a real magnet for diners in-the-know (“I’d happily eat here once a week if I lived locally – it’s always different!”). Former Noble Rot head chef Myles Donaldson delivers a daily changing lunch menu that’s not vegetarian or even vegan, but strong on both camps and on delivering “good, healthy food”. The interior is simple, but enhanced by floor-to-ceiling windows looking onto the street and into the garden. (There’s also coffee, cakes, etc all day).
6. Tea House Theatre
Afternoon tea restaurant in Lambeth
139 Vauxhall Walk - SE11
2023 Review: ‘Where there’s tea there’s hope’ is the philosophical underpinning of this “quirky café”, which occupies a converted pub by Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens, and “does amazing breakfasts” and “unusual teas”, plus yummy buns. “They are a tea house though, so there is no coffee available!!”
7. Dirty Burger
Burgers, etc restaurant in Vauxhall
Arch 54, 6 South Lambeth Road - SW8
2022 Review: This once-thriving burger brand from Nick Jones’s Soho House group has been reduced to a single branch, under the arches in Vauxhall, and a supporting role at stablemate Chicken Shop in St John’s Wood. Fans reckon it’s “good for when you’re in a hurry” – perhaps they should hurry, while it’s still there.
8. Forty Three Sichuan Kitchen
restaurant in Lambeth
43 South Lambeth Road - SW8
“An amazing combination of flavours and heat” is the reward for a visit to this Sichuan newcomer: a relatively simple-looking walk-in operation on two floors near Vauxhall Park. “Staff are knowledgeable and helpful” and the ingredients are high-quality (for example, only Iberico pork is used). Top Menu Tip – “anywhere that takes rabbit seriously is very good news!”
