French restaurant in Hunsdon
2 High Street - SG12
“Locals and visitors” beat a path to this “lovely pub with top-notch food” from chef James Rix and his wife Bianca, who have transformed it into an “Interesting and exceptionally busy venue” over the past 20 years. Top Menu Tip – “dessert on a whole different level: Paris Brest, choux pastry, praline cream, hot chocolate sauce & toasted nuts of exceptional taste and quality”.
2. Smith’s Brasserie
British, Modern restaurant in Ongar
Fyfield Rd - CM5
This Essex institution, founded almost 70 years ago, is still “the best fish restaurant in the area”, offering “consistently great food with even better service”. It’s relatively “formal”, which befits its status as a venue which attracts generations of the county’s notables, from Rod Stewart, Denise Van Outen and Victoria & David Beckham to the TOWIE crowd.
3. Ark Fish
Fish & chips restaurant in South Woodford
142 Hermon Hill - E18
“Fine fish” from Billingsgate and “good wine” make for an “excellent fish ’n’ chips meal” at this large South Woodford chippy.
4. Skewd Kitchen
Turkish restaurant in Enfield
12 Cockfosters Parade - EN4
This “trendy Turkish restaurant in Cockfosters” has given the Anatolian grill a smart makeover over the past decade, and now “has the vibe of a West End restaurant, with a DJ at the weekend” and “faultless service”. According to its biggest fans, “Cockfosters is becoming a destination thanks to restaurants like Skewd!”
5. Yard Sale Pizza
Pizza restaurant in Waltham Forest
15 Hoe Street - E17
“Reliably excellent pizza” – “better than the other high street chains” – is what you’ll find at this growing Clapton-based operation, now with 12 sites from Balham and Crystal Palace in the south to Tufnell Park (which, as of summer 2024, is the latest to open). They’re perhaps “not smart as places to eat”, but that hardly matters – and the “toppings are interesting without being off-puttingly un-pizza-ish”.
6. Provender
French restaurant in Wanstead
17 High St - E11
This “local French venue in Wanstead” has been a reliable bastion of classic Gallic bistro cooking for 14 years. Its founder, veteran restaurateur Max Renzland, stepped down during the pandemic, since when the odd regular complains that the “the menu has been dumbed down”, but its food ratings remain generally sound.
7. Tonkotsu
Japanese restaurant in Walthamstow
Unit 4, 202 Hoe Street - E17
This 15-strong London noodle chain (now with branches in Brighton, Birmingham and Bristol) is “a good stand-by” – perhaps it’s “not as good as some of its competitors”, but it is widely seen as “good value”: in particular “the lunch-time meal deal” is a winner.
8. The Waggoners
French restaurant in Welwyn
Brickwall Close, Ayot Grn - AL6
This “French gem” in a “pleasant little pub tucked away in a corner of Ayot Green” serves “good food at sensible prices” in an atmosphere that’s “refined without being daunting”. Patron Laurent Brydniak has “run the place well” for 15 years, and does a good trade at lunchtime feeding walkers visiting the nearby Brocket Hall Estate.
9. Kudu
South African restaurant in Marylebone
7 Moxon Street - W1
This “wonderful little local restaurant” is now the flagship of a Peckham-based ‘Collective’ (Little Kudu, Curious Kudu, Kudu Grill) from second-generation restaurateur Amy Corbin (daughter of Corbin & King’s Chris) and her South African-born partner Patrick Williams, who infuses some dishes on the “quite unusual” menu with a light Saffa spin: “engaging and fun” with food that’s “spot-on”. Top Tip – gorgeous cute garden.
10. Yard Sale Pizza
Pizza restaurant in Leytonstone
622 High Road Leytonstone - E11
“Reliably excellent pizza” – “better than the other high street chains” – is what you’ll find at this growing Clapton-based operation, now with 12 sites from Balham and Crystal Palace in the south to Tufnell Park (which, as of summer 2024, is the latest to open). They’re perhaps “not smart as places to eat”, but that hardly matters – and the “toppings are interesting without being off-puttingly un-pizza-ish”.
11. Chuku's
West African restaurant in Seven Sisters
274 High Road - N15
“Tasty Nigerian food with a modern twist” has won an enthusiastic following for Emeka and Ifeyinwa Frederick’s West African ‘tapas’ joint in Seven Sisters – a lively, “cheap ’n’ cheerful” choice whose “fame deserves to be spread far and wide”.
12. Auberge du Lac
British, Modern restaurant in Welwyn
“At last, the Auberge has found its feet again and is now up and running smoothly” following its reopening in May 2023, after a three-year hiatus. While the “beautiful setting” in a hunting lodge on the Brocket Hall Estate remains unchanged, these days chef John Barber (ex-of London’s Mandarin Oriental) is at the helm, his “confident and assured” cooking more modern British than during the venue’s Gallic heyday under Jean-Christophe Novelli – and more democratic too (particularly the “good-value fixed-price lunch”). As ever, “the decor could still do with a refresh but, on a sunny day, a table out on the terrace by the lake is unbeatable”.
13. Haven Bistro
British, Modern restaurant in Whetstone
1363 High Road - N20
“Excellent-quality food at a reasonable price” is behind the 24-year success of Austrian-born chef Julius Oberegger’s Whetstone bistro. The cuisine is “mostly modern European but with an eye on pan-Asian flavours” – which makes it “an oasis” in a part of north London where the standard dining options are Greek, Turkish or pizza.
14. Sushi Monster
restaurant in Waltham Forest
1st floor, 134-138 Station Road - E4
“A mini Shinkansen Japanese bullet train that brings your sushi orders” is a UK first at this bright, first-floor Japanese café in Chingford: a fun cheap ’n’ cheerful experience. “Downstairs is a proper pub (the ‘Rusty Bike’) complete with TVs showing sport and a selection of board games: you can order Thai and sushi on both floors. Yum!” (It goes without saying: this is not first choice for culinary purists).
15. Jones & Sons
British, Modern restaurant in South Woodford
98 - 106 High Road - E18
“Busy at times, but still with a great vibe” – this converted Victorian factory in Dalston (opened in 2013) will be familiar to some as the location for the 2021 hit film ‘Boiling Point’; and wins acclaim for its grills and other modern British dishes. In June 2024, they launched a new two-floor spin-off in South Woodford: this time in a fine-looking Georgian building – a large site with 150 covers and a 50-seat outside terrace. It has a similarly flexible menu, with options for snacks, brunch, and Sunday lunch.
16. SlowBurn London
British, Modern restaurant in Waltham Forest
114b Blackhorse Lane - E17
“Verging on peak-hipster (but don‘t let that put you off!)” – this jeans factory in Walthamstow is a “high-end denim garment manufacturer by day (they have a shop in Coal Drops Yard), but by night they clear down the working tables and have a fully functioning bar and à la carte dog-friendly restaurant!”. “It’s very surreal – tables are positioned up against the machines and there are bins full of denim waiting to be dyed”. “Luckily, the food – while it won’t win any Michelin stars, is interesting and well-executed”. “The modern European menu is designed for sharing, with limited but hearty and delicious meat choices; and there’s a lot of choice for veggies” (“with a bit of a focus on health and sustainability”).
17. Taro
Japanese restaurant in Waltham Forest
76 High Street - E17
“A bit of a dive to be honest, but the food is still so good!” – no-one claims Mr Taro’s group is particularly stylish, but for “very generous portions of the classic Japanese dishes (including decent sushi, teriyaki and katsu curry)” these functional canteens hit the spot, and at a very good price. The latest (summer 2024) additions to its roster of eight venues are Catford in southeast London and Brentwood in Essex.
18. Homies on Donkeys
Mexican restaurant in Waltham Forest
686 High Road Leytonstone - E11
Energetic outside signage, a no-less-colourful graffitied interior, and a soundtrack of pumping hip hop help set up an impactful experience at this year-old taqueria in the middle of Leytonstone, brought to us all by owner and head chef, ‘Smokey’. There’s no cutlery for the excellent tacos, which come in about 10 different varieties – you are invited to ‘get messy’!
19. Odos
Mediterranean restaurant in Barnet
238-240 High Street - EN5
The “Mediterranean/posh Greek” food is “consistently good” at this high-performing spot that is a “fantastic addition to Barnet High Street” – it’s “really buzzy on a Saturday night”, and “new specials are frequently added to the menu”. Former apprentice Gerry Sands was promoted to co-ownership by founder Louis Loizu at the age of just 21.
20. Sofalino
Italian restaurant in Barnet
1390 High Road - N20
There’s something engagingly “old-fashioned” in approach at Adriano Bernabei and his family’s “lovely local” Italian restaurant in Whetstone (although it’s relatively youthful, having only been founded in 2011). The food is “always well-prepared and always tastes great”. Top Menu Tip – “veal escalope with pasta comes recommended”.
