Featured Brockenhurst Restaurants
1. Cambium
British, Modern restaurant in Brockenhurst
Lyndhurst Rd - SO42
2023 Review: ‘Dylan James’s dishes pay homage to the British countryside, and embrace the nature of the seasons’ – well that’s what the website says! – at this “lovely restaurant in a beautiful hotel”: a New Forest destination that started life as a royal hunting lodge and is nowadays a luxurious spa complex. Reports in our annual diners’ poll agree, all of them applauding its attractive, light interior and brasserie food from an all-day menu that’s “carefully cooked, and good value”.
2. The Pig
British, Modern restaurant in Brockenhurst
Beaulieu Road - SO42
The “idyllic New Forest location” is the big draw at the original Pig, where Robin & Judy Hutson set the template for their shabby-chic country-house hotel group that had grown to 11 branches by the time they stepped back into retirement at the end of 2024. The “food is perhaps not quite as adventurous as it used to be”, but its basic premise of “fresh local produce, cooked perfectly” still passes muster for most reporters. Black marks, though, for some “poorly trained staff” and “seriously overpriced wines”.
3. Hartnett Holder & Co
Italian restaurant in Lyndhurst
Beaulieu Rd - SO43
For a dozen years now, Angela Hartnett’s “country restaurant with an Italian focus” has put in a “good but quite pricey” performance in the New Forest, as part of a “classy” 33 bedroom property, which fans say it’s a “sheer joy, from the venue, to the staff, to the best non-alcoholic drinks menu ever… and then the food!” No other reports demur, other than that it can seem “expensive”. Luke Holder is the chef in charge on a day-to-day basis here. Top Tip – for those counting the pennies there’s a ‘Pranzetto’ menu (which means a light, leisurely lunch) – two courses for £39.50.
4. Samphire at Stanwell House
British, Modern restaurant in Lymington
14-15 High Street - SO41
This two-year-old restaurant in a “boutique hotel on the main street of Lymington” specialises in “simply prepared and beautifully presented fish, straight from the local boats”. Experienced chef Matthew Tomkinson, previously of The Hambrough on the Isle of Wight, took over the kitchen in early 2024.
5. Elderflower
British, Modern restaurant in Lymington
4-5 Quay St - SO41
“A really lovely restaurant that’s a real find in Lymington” – Andrew and Marjolaine Du Bourg have run this fine dining venue near the harbour since 2014 and all reports suggest that “if you want to celebrate a special occasion, or just have a self-indulgent dining experience, then Elderflower is the place to come”. It’s a consciously ‘haute’ experience, where there are four, five and seven-course modern British tasting menus for £85, £95 and £105 per person with “interesting and flavourful ingredient combinations, beautifully presented” – “Michelin star level food without the fuss and extra expense”. “The staff (a young team) are all pleasant and professional” too.
6. Rivaaz
Indian restaurant in Lymington
7 Saint Thomas Street - SO41
2024 Review: “An absolute gem of an Indian” that’s “always busy with a great atmosphere” and “well worth a visit” for its “fantastic food” and “superb staff who really know their menu” (no wonder it has snaffled the Asian Curry Awards’ ‘Best Asian Restaurant on the South Coast of England’ title for five years running).
