The “beautiful dining room” of this stylish New Forest country house retreat sets an upbeat tone for this celeb-chef’s out-of-town venture. There’s a general acknowledgement, however, that its Italian-style cooking is “pricey”, and although fans say it’s “well worth every penny”, others recommend avoiding the à la carte and timing your visit for the “great set lunch menus”.
“Smart casual in approach”: chef-turned-restaurateur Angela Hartnett’s rural hideaway – an “uber-stylish country house” in the New Forest – is somewhere “you could take the kids for lunch and eat well, and also good for a relaxed, grown-up dinner”, serving “very good”, “Italian-style” cooking.
“If you’ve come to a New Forest country house for lunch from a famous London chef, then this might be more casual and relaxed than you were hoping for”, with Italian food that’s “not too complicated”. But “even if it’s not exciting cuisine, dishes are well-balanced adn of superior quality”, service is “attentive”, and at the end of the day everyone “loves the informal atmosphere”.
For fans, Angela Hartnett’s New Forest hotel “oozes unpretentious style”, with a drinks list that’s “second to none” and “absolutely delicious” Italian-ish cuisine. For sceptics, though, albeit only three years old, it’s “not as good as it used to be by a long chalk” – bugbears being “awkward” seating, and a feeling it’s “pricey”.
