Featured Bluewater Restaurants
1. The Old Bank
British, Modern restaurant in Westerham
8 Market Square - TN16
The clue is in the name of Adam & Emma Turley’s smart operation on the high street, where a “high standard of cooking is delivered unfussily and calmly”. There’s a wide range of menus, from a weekday à la carte option to five-course and eight-course tasting options for £75 and £105 per person respectively (both with vegan alternatives).
2. Babur
Indian restaurant in Forest Hill
119 Brockley Rise - SE23
“Love having such a unique Indian locally” – this “culinary stalwart of South East London is still going strong after nearly 40 years”. “Staff welcome you like an old friend” and chef Jiwan Lal’s cuisine is “at least as good as that of the West End’s fine dining establishments”, in the view of many locals; and “magnificent value for this level of cooking”. Top Tip – “good value buffet on the weekends”.
3. Indian Essence
Indian restaurant in Petts Wood
176-178 Petts Wood Rd - BR5
“Proving you don‘t need to be central London for outstanding Indian food” – this extremely popular outpost in the SE London ’burbs is “part of Atul Kochhar’s growing empire, serving modern Indian menus of top quality”: “amazing food from an excellent tasting menu, alongside a regular à la carte offering”. None of the many reports we receive has a bad word to say about the place, also acknowledging the “really good staff” and “great choice of drinks”. Regular live music too.
4. Barge East
British, Modern restaurant in Hackney
Sweetwater Mooring, White Post Lane - E9
“A great summer spot with friends”: this 120-year-old barge is permanently moored in Hackney Wick – near the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park – and provides a “fabulous experience on the water that makes for a great fun night out”. One reporter did quibble about the prices, but still said: “I loved our meal here – the concept is brilliant, with the interior of the barge turned into a cheerful dining room, and unusual dishes based on fish and foods grown in a kitchen garden by the mooring”.
5. Boisdale of Canary Wharf
Scottish restaurant in Canary Wharf
Cabot Place - E14
“If you are not planning a return to the office, the largest selection of whisky ever seen” helps round off a business lunch at this Canary Wharf branch of Ranald Macdonald’s Caledonian group. “The restaurant prides itself on good Scottish ingredients… shellfish in season… excellent fillet steak” and “tables are sufficiently spaced for private conversation”. Top Tip – “regular visitors may join a club which gives discounts on wines and they host musical events in the evenings”.
6. Obicà Mozzarella Bar, Pizza e Cucina
Italian restaurant in Canary Wharf
1 West Wintergarden, 35 Bank St - E14
“Surprisingly decent Italian fare… proper (and huge) pizza and pasta and, if you have room, pleasing puddings” carves an ongoing niche for these smartly decorated outposts of an international Italian chain (started in 2004), where – as the name hints – many dishes feature Mozzarella di Bufala.
7. Capeesh
Italian restaurant in Isle of Dogs
4 Pan Peninsula Square - E14
Dazzling views from the 48th-floor of a Canary Wharf tower help create a sense of occasion at this family-run, five-year-old Italian restaurant and ‘Sky Bar’. Its long menu of pasta, pizza, grills and other fare doesn’t inspire a huge volume of feedback, but the limited amount we have is all upbeat.
8. The Guildford Arms
British, Modern restaurant in Greenwich
55 Guildford Grove - SE10
“Good all-round” feedback continues to win a thumbs-up for Guy Awford’s Georgian tavern in Greenwich, where much of the menu comes from the robata grill. Summer is the best time to visit to enjoy the fab garden.
9. The Bell Inn
British, Modern restaurant in Horndon on the Hill
High Rd - SS17
“Still our favourite local after 30+ years..” – This “delightfully olde worlde” 15th-century coaching inn has been run by the same family since 1938, with landlords Christine & John Vereker these days helped by the third generation. It remains “a lovely, vibrant old venue that trailblazed the gastropub concept back in the ’80s and is still producing wonderful food in a genuine pub atmosphere”.
10. Café Nucleus

Halpern Conservancy Board Building, 15A High Street - ME1

11. Rosa's Thai Cafe
Thai restaurant in Greenhithe
The Plaza Upper Gallery, Bluewater Shopping Centre - DA9
2021 Review: The “lovely Thai food” at these reliable cafés is “impressively authentic given that they are a chain” – “excellent value” and “fast”, if occasionally let down by “iffy service”. Founded in 2008 by Saiphin and Alex Moore, who inherited the name of their first East End site, the group has 18 branches in London and expanded to Liverpool, Manchester, Reading (delivery only) and Leeds following the sale of a majority stake to US investors. The couple also have two spin-offs, Lao Café in Covent Garden and the new Chinese noodle bar Hoh Sek in St Katharine Docks.
12. Miller & Carter Bexley
Steaks & grills restaurant in Bexley
Bourne Rd - DA5
2023 Review: “Very busy steak-centric restaurant” (part of a chain owned by pub giant Mitchells & Butlers) that is one of the more commented-on destinations in our annual diners’ poll in the poorly served ’burbs to the south east of the metropolis. The food is “reliable”, “without being exceptional” and – notwithstanding some blips regarding service and management generally – this can be a “reasonable” destination in the locale.
13. Xian
Chinese restaurant in Orpington
324 High St - BR6
“Still hitting the mark”, according to one diehard long-term fan: this family-run Cantonese fixture on the high street once had a national reputation as a favourite of the late Gary Rhodes; and although it doesn’t inspire the huge volume of feedback it once did, is still said to be “consistently good” by all who opine on it.
14. Bank House Wine Bar & Kitchen
British, Modern restaurant in Chislehurst
11 High Street - BR7
2021 Review: This September 2019 yearling in the heart of the town (occupying a former NatWest bank, hence the name) is notable for its owner: Stuart Gillies is the former CEO of Gordon Ramsay's restaurant group, and has launched this venture with the help of wife Cecilia. Previously a chef, Gillies has devised a ‘European small plates’ menu for the two-floor wine bar.
15. Cinnamon Culture
Indian restaurant in Chislehurst
97 High St - BR7
This contemporary curry house wins solid ratings for its food, with unusual chef’s signature dishes including a mixed grill of achari ostrich filet, chicken tikka and lamb chop. Family-run, it transferred to Chislehurst after a decade in Plaistow Lane, Bromley.
16. Con Gusto
Italian restaurant in Woolwich
No 1 Street - SE18
2022 Review: “Everything you could wish for in a local”, say fans of this quirky Italian, in a tiny but characterful former guards’ room in the grounds of the old Woolwich Arsenal. “High-quality food is freshly prepared in an amazing setting with friendly, professional staff. A joy!”.
17. Café Spice Namaste
Indian restaurant in City
1-2 Lower Dock Walk, Royal Dock - E16
“Shame it’s now so out-of-the-way, but well worth a visit” – after 26 years on the fringe of the City, Cyrus & Pervin Todiwala relocated their famous Indian venue to this new unit on the Royal Docks in 2022. It’s a “light and airy setting” (not far from London Excel and City Airport) with bright views over the water and docks. “Cyrus continues to evolve his dishes, for all occasions”, and “the Todiwalas are excellent hosts too”: “staff are so passionate and personal to all who come and dine” on the “wonderful Indian food with a Portuguese twist”.
18. Chapter One
International restaurant in Locksbottom
Farnborough Common - BR6
“Very good in all respects… and it’s NOT in London!” – Andrew McLeish is entering his 25th year of owning this “stylish” well-known destination a short drive from Bromley: “a welcome spot in a culinary desert thanks to its high standards” and a favourite for many occasions (including a “romantic” celebration among a widespread fan club that includes a huge number of reporters living in BR postcodes). “A consistent friend that never disappoints”, “service is professional and friendly”, the cuisine is of “high quality”, the setting is “comfortable” and “there’s a good choice of wines by the glass from the Coravin system”. There’s an à la carte menu and brasserie section as well as a fancier ‘Gourmet Menu’ at £125 per person.
19. Pumproom Restaurant at Copper Rivet Distillery
British, Modern restaurant in Chatham
A “seriously dramatic room” plays host to meals in the restored 1873 pump house at Chatham’s historic dockyard on the Medway, which has been converted into a distillery and restaurant by Bob Russell and his sons Matthew & Stephen. Top Menu Tip – “amazing roasts on Sundays”.
20. Yi-Ban
Chinese restaurant in Victoria Docks
London Regatta Centre, Dockside Rd, Royal Albert Dock - E16
2022 Review: No feedback this year on this distant Chinese restaurant, near Royal Albert Dock DLR. If you are looking to eat in these parts though – while watching the take-offs and landings at nearby London City Airport – it is worth knowing about.
