Featured Shropshire Restaurants
1. Mortimers British, Modern restaurant in Ludlow 17 Corve St - SY8
“Oak-panelled comfort” with “beautiful décor”, plus “charming” and “professional” service set a perfect tone for “delightful” and “inventive” modern cuisine at this well-known foodie address, formerly made famous by Bibendum’s Claude Bosi (and nowadays run by his protégé, Wayne Smith). Its ratings waned a little last year, though, on the back of some reviews which were not damning, but “disappointing at the price”.
2. The Charlton Arms British, Modern restaurant in Ludlow Ludford Bridge - SY8
Cedric (brother of Claude, who used to run Hibiscus nearby) & Amy Bosi’s old stone pub with rooms profits from “superb views over the River Teme”. “The food has its off days, but is generally reliable, and often very good”.
3. The Clive Restaurant With Rooms British, Modern restaurant in Ludlow Bromfield - SY8
2017 Review: A “firm favourite” set in an 18th-century farmhouse handy for the castle, with an attractive red-brick façade and a B&B annexe, scoring solid feedback for its “consistently good” cuisine.
4. CSONS at The Green Cafe British, Modern restaurant in Ludlow Dinham Millennium Green - SY8
“Everything is very fresh and full-flavoured” at this “great riverside venue” run by the four Crouch brothers, overlooking the Teme at Dinham weir, beneath the dramatic walls of Ludlow Castle. It’s a “relaxed and friendly” spot, “ideal for meeting friends” for an “excellent breakfast or lunch”, with dinner on Fridays and Saturdays.
5. The Haughmond restaurant in Shrewsbury Upton Magna - SY4
2017 Review: “An exceptional village pub-with-rooms serving beautiful British food” – you can opt for the bar menu (“fantastic, fresh burger with superb relish and brioche”), but the “adjoining restaurant offers fine dining” – “the chef is self-taught, which is astonishing considering the standard of cuisine”.
6. Old Downton Lodge British, Modern restaurant in Ludlow Downton on the Rock - SY8
Very attractively converted from an old farm with barns and a mill, this restaurant-with-rooms a short drive from Ludlow has its sights set high when it comes to the high quality of its cuisine, and Karl Martin’s cooking – awarded a rare four rosettes by the AA – “shows a high degree of skill without confronting diners with too many tastes”. One or two reporters find the experience too costly, but all rate the victuals here as good or better.
7. The Cliffe at Dinham restaurant in Ludlow 6 Halton Lane - SY8
Just across the River Teme from Ludlow Castle, a short walk from Dinham Bridge, this small hotel incorporates a conservatory restaurant extension with garden views, and terrace for the summer. Reviews of Ian Pugh’s modernised but relatively traditional cooking are very positive: “consistently delivering a good quality dining experience, with an imaginatively presented, seasonal menu”.
8. The Raven Hotel & Restaurant British, Traditional restaurant in Much Wenlock Barrow St - TF13
Fine Dining Restaurant The restaurant is situated in what is believed to be the town’s original 15th Century listed almshouses. The huge fireplace and exposed oak trusses are just a few of the original features which enhance this unique building accessed from the main re...
9. Fishmore Hall British, Modern restaurant in Ludlow Fishmore Rd - SY8
2018 Review: In this foodie town, a laid back country house hotel, where chef Andrew Birch wins ecstatic praise from (nearly) all reporters for “perfectly executed, innovative and delicious” food – even if the surroundings strike some as “a bit ordinary”, the “brilliant” victuals “more than make up for it”.
10. The Fish House Fish & seafood restaurant in Ludlow 51 Bullring - SY8
2017 Review: “Only open Wednesday to Saturday, this is a fishmonger's serving cold fish dishes (including seafood platters) at lunch times”; “seating around barrels is limited and not the most comfortable, but despite this it is well worth a visit”.
