Opening June 2024 in the Stock Exchange Hotel (owned by ex-footballers Gary Neville and Ryan Giggs), a 'British bistro' from chef Niall Keating, of Lunar in Stoke-on-Trent and formerly of Whatley Manor in the Cotswolds. The grand, domed dining room previously hosted Tom Kerridge's Bull & Bear and the short-lived Stock Market Grill.

Below the domed ceiling of Manchester’s august former Stock Exchange – built in 1904 – chef Niall Keating is the latest star to try and make a success of this tricky space with Gary Neville’s swish hotel (which, in living memory, has been both the Stock Market Grill and Tom Kerridge’s Bull & Bear). “The room looks a lot better than in its previous incarnation” recapturing its natural elegant, period grandeur. The culinary offering is not the haute cuisine that won Niall his two Michelin stars at Whatley Manor Hotel: here it’s trendy small plates and (rather expensive) posh-brasserie mains of roasts and grilled prime meat and seafood. Early reports suggest its “lovely”-to-variable Afternoon tea is a big deal here and there is also a pre-theatre menu.

Summary

Can well-known chef Niall Keating help make a go of this June 2024 newcomer? It occupies the impressive domed space of the city’s former Stock Exchange: an imperious Edwardian pile built in 1904. Now part of the Stock Exchange Hotel (owned by ex-footballers Gary Neville and Ryan Giggs), this ‘British bistro’ occupies a space that’s seen other celeb occupants come and go – most recently the short-lived Stock Market Grill (RIP) and previously Tom Kerridge’s Bull & Bear (longer RIP).

For 34 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
